Teaching a dog to bark even more than he normally does is a stupid thing to do.

I tried to teach my cat to sit by telling her to sit before I would feed her.  Now she just sits at her bowl and looks at me expecting to be fed!

It’s not all that hard to train dogs. Cats a little more so. But you have to KEEP AT IT. And you have to reward the behavior you want, even if it’s the first step.

The old story, a dog pooped on the floor , the owner rubbed his nose in it and threw the poor dog out the window. Now the dog poops on the floor rubs his nose in it and jumps out the window!

My dogs don’t need to be taught to bark to eat.

They DO Need to be taught to bark if they want to go out

A friend had a pup who would poop in the house while he was at work. He’d come home, rub the dog’s nose in the poop and toss him out the (open) window into the yard. And it worked.

Now, he comes home from work, the dog runs over to his fresh poop, pokes his nose in it, and jumps out the window.

A cocker spaniel picked up a rock. The owner offered it a treat so it would put down the rock. The next time he let the dog out, it picked up a rock and brought it to the owner expecting a treat.

My last beagle was trained that if she got loose from me, she was to go a few doors down to a neighbor’s home and get on the porch and bark. Training started with me taking her onto their porch and making little doggie noises until she she did too, and eventually she had it down pat. I could test the skill by letting her on the porch while I stayed down, and she would bark once. If no one came, she would bark again. So I got my current dog, took her over to their porch, and found out she really doesn’t bark. But she does know all of the neighbors and is chipped, plus info is on her collar. She is more likely to only take off if she smells a rabbit. I am pretty sure in this frozen winter I could let her out, she would not go more than 10 feet and pee and return, but I am not putting a hunting dog to the test.

Trust me, you’ll regret it if he does. Our dog will bark her head off when we stand up around dinner time, which brings the two cats running!

Of course she also barks to go out, or whines, which we really don’t mind :)
