And then there’s their belief that “freedom” is their “right”, but not anyone else’s.
Lockdown protesters in Denver, Colorado weren’t just on foot, but driving around honking their horns. A few health care workers (with masks) staged a counter-protest, standing in a crosswalk to block the vehicles. This angered members of the original “protest”, who seemed to think that only they had a right to protest and disrupt.
The Facebook sites that promote these protests are mostly from the same people. The Dorr brothers are far right activists. They believe that the NRA approves of gun regulations that are too strict. Even some Republicans have referred to them as “scam artists”.
Come with me up to the 20,000 foot view of all this….. There is a rampant righteousness going on everywhere isn’t there,? Trump claims he’s right about everything. (He’s not) The MAGA’s, the Democrats, the Republicans and so many others are all screaming that they are Right about the things they think are Wrong, which are the non-MAGA’s, the Republicans, the Democrats, etc. But think about this: their righteousness does not exist without insisting that there is something wrong which it opposes. That means that Righteousness does not exist without Wrongtiousness. (It’s a good word. I just made it up.) If there were Nothing Wrong, what would all those folks have to scream about? (BTW, seems to me that most religions are based on righteousness, and if you don’t believe their way, you are wrong which justifies all kinds of unpleasantness…like discrimination or even headlessness.) The problem is that we all want affirmation that we are Right. And the cheap seat ride is to make someone else wrong…but it rings hollow, it’s never enough, never really satisfying. And it’s a narcotic for some. (It’s also what elections are all about. I’m Right, he’s Wrong, Elect Me.)But I think that there is a Rightness that exists by itself…and that deep within most of us there is an honest sense of Yes, that’s the Right thing to do. When you take away all the inflammatory rhetoric, when you take away those who scream in opposition, when you set aside the urge to Win (which is somehow prevailing over someone else)…what’s left is a calm: Yes, that’s the Right thing to do…that’s the Right way to be. And there is honesty and integrity and responsibility and contribution in that. And that’s a pretty good way to live your life. Leastwise, I think so. Well, thanks for coming with me up to 20,000 feet for a while. Hope you think about it and decide What’s Right…
If only it happened that fast.. that is the trouble with this COVID-19 thing.. what we see is the effect of what we did 2~3 weeks ago… and it seems we.. (especially republicans) have a short memory.
Governor Kemp of Georgia, who is now in the lead over De Santis of Florida for the Dumb and Dumber award, has decided to partially open up Georgia to such essential services as gyms and tattoo parlors, despite the state not meeting the minimum federal benchmarks in testing, falling covid-19 deaths, and adequate PPE. He won’t even let local governments impose stricter guidelines, with the threat of using the National Guard to enforce his dangerous orders.
