A bit of trivia most of us probably know; The first land battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, was fought on the property of one Wilmer MacClean. Mr MacClean did not like war being fought on his land. He moved. To that little village of Appomattox Court House. The Civil War started AND ended on one man’s property.
Could we have a cameo appearance by the guy who ACTUALLY wrote “The Art of The Deal”? Or do ghost writers haunt too far down the pecking order to be worthwhile?
It was the beginning of the end, but only the beginning; skirmishes and small battles still occurred in Texas and the Far Western territorial theaters for at least two months AFTER Gen. Lee finally surrendered. Word took a while to get around in those days….
Neither Grant nor Lee, Sherman nor Johnson had the authority to make the political deals necessary to close down the Confederate States of America. Disarming and disbanding the two major Rebel field armies put an effective end to the war while the Confederate government ran for its life. Events a few days later made any compassionate agreement impossible.
