    Actually, recent research has shown that it was HUMAN lice that spread the black death. Rattus rattus has been unfairly blamed for carrying fleas which caused the outbreak.

    There was a medieval town that survived the Plague by leaving coins in small stone depressions in a well outside their town. The depressions had vinegar, disinfecting the coins. Compassionate, honest neighbors obeyed the edict to stay out of the town and gave supplies that the town paid for at the well. When the coast was clear, the townspeople picked up their supplies. They didn’t starve to death, unlike many other townspeople and cities. Would that more locations had done that.
