“Alas! How dreary would be the world if there was no Santa Claus!… There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.”
Destiny23 - i read “Calvin & Hobbes” first this morning and didn’t understand your naughty line reference until i went and read “Garfield” - excellent use of cross-strip referencing! lol
“For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward…”
I Corinthians 9:17a
Even if I do it unwillingly, at least I avoid the consequences of not doing it.
My granddaughter asked me with the smallest voice yesterday if she’d been naughty or nice this year? I said nice of course. She said she wasn’t sure and did I think that Santa would agree with me. I told her not to worry and Santa will come this year. She kissed me and said she was very happy. I just thought it was so cute!
The difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant: the Old, you had to make yourself be good by all those rules; the New, you submit and believe and HE changes your heart so you can be good from the inside.
Night-Gaunt49
Human beings survived because of this good trait even in prehistoric caves. To us enjoying my friend Calvin learning this with the help of Hobbes.
If Santa happened to be watching at that time, it would give him the wrong impression of how Calvin usually is. Put another way if this was one of the few random checks, the amount of naughtiness per check would be higher.
Poor Calvin–such a moral dilemma: Should he be good, and possibly not gain any reward? Should he be bad, and possibly suffer if someone notices?
He’ll continue to torment himself until he realizes how much better being good is for his peace of mind, his well-being, his relationships, as well as various other ways.
Nightgaunt - it constitutes somewhere around 5%, but that’s enough to terrorize the rest of us. Puddleglum2 - I am reminded of the piece of Scripture which says: “those who would be justified by the law…”
@JAMEJO, it would be good in a proper context–such as a snowball fight, which is practice for real-life conflicts, like war. But in this context–smacking an oblivious Susie–that’s probably not good.

Don’t worry, Calvin. You only have to be unwillingly good for 13 more days.

But as Jon just learned, you have to wait on hold a LONG time to get through to Santa’s Naughty Line! I doubt if Susie would have the patience…

By that argument, Susie could make a false accusation against Calvin, and Santa wouldn’t know she was lying. Good thing Calvin’s not paranoid….

I procrastinate at being bad so everyone thinks I’m good when I’m just lazy.

So if you want to be bad but you’re not because you have something to gain does that equal being good?

Its not like being good now will solve anything this is the “Noddle-Incident” Kid we are talkin’ about here.
Good Idea with the sign though. :)

As much trouble as Calvin get in, even Santa’s random checking would catch him in something.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking - it’s a GOOD thing he ran it by Hobbes first, since he didn’t think of the “she’ll snitch” angle himself…
I need a Hobbes to help ME think straight, too!
