I actually enjoy grocery shopping, & why pay more to have someone else do it. Good exercise, sometimes meet friends or have friendly chats with other shoppers, & sometimes see things I might have otherwise missed on my list, or see something new I might want to try out. All this would be missed by ordering online for pickup.

My spousal unit hates to grocery shop, partly (IMO) b/c she does the end of month paycheck model of shopping where you end up pulling two buggies around. I Love to shop for groceries b/c I use the European model of going weekly and only carrying a hand basket. I’m in and out in no time, produce is always fresh, I’m aware of where things are and what’s new, what’s been moved, and prices are in my head and I can spot unadvertised specials due to frequency. Concur also w/ CharlieFarmhere above about the social/exercise aspects. On line is for busy parents who have multiple kids events going all over all the time… time is the valued resource for them.

Charlie and Army: I can understand all of your points, but, at this point in my life, they don’t apply to me, and I no longer have children in the house. I have a demanding job, and I have to work too much, so I don’t have time for social interaction at the store.

However, I will retire for the second and final time either this year in May or within two years. Then, I will definitely enjoy the social aspect, and I am looking forward to it.

I love this comic, but what struck me that she is avoiding the work of shopping and will make time for her walks to stay in shape. We are retired and grocery shop together but do avoid Fridays as it can be crazy in the stores then.

Arlo likes checking out the other ladies at the supermarket while shopping. That’s why he likes shopping there.

Hubby is a very good shopper and often offers to go to the store for me. He doesn’t bring home crazy stuff, and will pick up things we need but I forgot to put on the list. To quote my sister, “I’m going to let him keep me.”

I (male), too, do all the grocery shopping. I do all the cooking, and therefore must shop. But I like to do it. And I get half my meal ideas while shopping.

That’s a cartoon I can relate to, especially as I get older. These days I don’t mind going to get something for dinner, I can let my imagination soar! Chili dogs & tatter tots or T-bones & baked potatoes? It’s fun!

When it comes to dairy, produce and meat I’m a picky picker. I wouldn’t feel comfortable having someone else (except my wife) make those selections. And then there are the spur of the moment purchases.

I would never trust someone else to pick out my groceries for me and keep them properly frozen/refrigerated until I picked them up. How would they know what produce to pick?

I’m a label reader. You can’t do that on line.

Temple Grandin, in her book, “Animals in Translation,” talks about “seeking” behavior and how a lot of us like “seeking” just like dogs and cats do. I suspect that’s why I like grocery shopping. And flea markets, used book sales, etc. I’m always looking for (seeking) that hidden “treasure.”

I do not know….somehow…. I am truly not fond of the way Janis’ laughing grin is depicted in panel #3. To me, it looks creepy, and is not the way I would have anticipated JJ drawing that sort of laugh.

I know it is just a minor aberration in drawing, but it is somewhat distracting to me in regards to the rest of the comic.

Disregarding how the grin/laugh is drawn…. however…. I have to agree with Janis in being surprised (surprised enough to laugh and think it was a joke) that Arlo likes to grocery shop. It is definitely not one of my favorite tasks, but it is a little bit better when I can cajole my wife to shop with me, and it is a lot better when I find she is planning to grocery shop instead of having me do it (she does this when she is going to meander around a lot looking at things).

When my husband went out to work I would go food shopping once a week – 1/2 hour – and maybe a quick fill in on Friday for the weekend so I would not need to to go with him as he hated food shopping. Now we are together 24 hours a day all but 2 days a month – in most months, the others all month – we go food shopping almost daily as he is looking for diversion.

My mom is 88 and has major trouble walking. She still drives and insists on doing her own shopping – alone. She grabs a shopping cart and uses it for balance.

The 2020/‘21 pandemic has underlined for many of us— even introverts— that staying home 24/7 and almost never going anywhere gets old awful fast, and makes you feel stale. I have never minded grocery shopping myself, unless I’m real pressed for time or something.
