It’s full name is “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” Rhode Island is the large island in the southeast of the state, now usually called Aquidneck Island.
Montessori has great geography lessons. Lots of large puzzles, coloring in maps, learning rhymes, songs, etc. It can be learned even by young kids. My daughter used a computer program or two later on for lots of geography tests.
I recall one school system in Texas that was trying to get a handle on the backgrounds of their students, many of whom were immigrants, so they asked a question on the registration form about their region of origin. One option was “Central America”. They were puzzled that a lot of checkmarks in those boxes came from kids named Smith and Johnson and Miller and Polachowski, so they investigated a bit more deeply. Turns out they were from places like Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma — you know, Central America!

This is like many school kids. They know very little about the country that they live in.

Reminds me of my years in the travel industry. I was amazed at how many of my clients had no idea where they were going !
I swear, some of ’em could get lost going to their mailboxes !

Rumor has it that, before the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when people called from New Mexico, they were referred to the international ticket sales number.
