Luann will get a charge out of this!

    .

Actually, at the end of the clamps will usually be only 12 to 14 volts. For most people, the threshold for even feeling the voltage is about 42 volts. However, if you stick a 9 volt battery on your tongue, it will leave an odd feeling and taste. One of the facets of the business I own is I deal with industrial battery charging systems, and I can say that if someone puts their fingers across the terminals of a 12 volt battery, they will feel nothing.

    .

However, this is Luann’s dream, and in a dream, anything can happen. Actually, in Luanniverse anything can happen…

Well, we learn one thing from this comic. Nancy slept thru all her science classes and has no idea about basic electricity or how cars work.

(Actually, as anyone who has jumpstarted a car knows, just pinching Luann with those clamps – without the battery – would produce roughly the same effect, especially on her armpit.)

Ummm … is Luann still in high school on Sunday? Is that why her mother is making dire threats in order to wake her up?

It’s a holiday weekend. Why can’t she sleep in? Incidentally, I noticed what looks like a school report with an ‘A’ on it, posted on Luann’s wall. So she must be doing better at the Community College than she was in high school…

People keep saying the holiday weekend. Why would Luannverse time parallel real verse time including all holidays? I think that would be at the option of GE and Co. I get the idea of shocking her to wake her up, particularly on weekends, if that is the time, but using electricity is not a comfortable image to me. I guess though that maybe this is a sly reference to another cartoon, JUMPSTART?

Sort of like an Electro-Myo-Graph. Except those are usually performed in the neurology department of a hospital. Someone once asked me exactly what they were, and I simply said, “they hook jumper cables up to you and see how high they can make you jump.” Kind of like what we used to do to disembodied frog legs back in high school biology class.

As a teenage body goes through puberty, her circadian rhythm shifts three hours backward. Suddenly, going to bed at nine or ten o’clock at night is close to a biological impossibility. Studies of teenagers around the globe have found that adolescent brains do not start releasing melatonin until around eleven o’clock at night and keep pumping out the hormone well past sunrise. Adults, meanwhile, have little-to-no melatonin in their bodies when they wake up. With all that melatonin surging through their bloodstream, teenagers who are forced to be awake before eight in the morning are often barely alert and want nothing more than to give in to their body’s demands and fall back asleep. Because of the shift in their circadian rhythm, asking a teenager to perform well in a classroom during the early morning is like asking her to fly across the country and instantly adjust to the new time zone — and then do the same thing every night, for four years. This trend continues until 19.5 years in women and 21 in men. Then it reverses. At 55 we wake at about the time we woke prior to puberty. On average this is three hours earlier than adolescents. This means that for a teenager, a 7 am alarm call is the equivalent of a 4 am start for a person in their 50s.

I dislike this cartoon. The idea of shocking your progeny into activity is distasteful to me. I don’t see Luann as being lazy. She may very well be sleep deprived. Invasively prodding her to get up, especially with electricity, will not help her. I would be quite resentful if my parents did this to me.

It’s just amazing. When they are toddlers, they wake up at 5:30am and we can’t wait till they learn to sleep in.When they are teens, there is no prying them out of bed before noon. But – eventually they have kids of their own and we’ll laugh when their kids get them up at 5:30am!

My son was impossible to wake up. Even screaming at him didn’t work. Finally, I got an idea. I went over to the bed, lifted the covers and pinched his butt! I think the embarrassment for him was what worked, not the pinch itself, but he jumped out of bed like a rocket. Which also told me he had been awake but just being lazy.

I’ve thought about many ways to encourage a child to get out of bed. A mattress that slowly heats up or sends increasingly higher electricity through you. Or snakes or tarantulas in the bed. But I wouldn’t be able to touch the snakes or spiders, so that needs some tweaking. They make alarm clocks that move around the room so you have to get out of bed to turn them off.

I guess we will see later if there are guesses for Monday other than more funny interactions in the school, all with Tiff exclaiming, “Oh, come on!” which was suggested by a person yesterday, or Tiffany dropping the rose vase on Luann’s foot which was suggested by another poster a few days ago.

To get my son out of bed, I would get a metal bucket and a small ball peen hammer, go in his room and start clattering the hammer inside the bucket. It finally got to where he would hear me coming with the bucket and he would get up.

What is Nancy going to say to AAA? “Hi. My name is Nancy DeGroot. I have a problem. You see, I have a lazy 18-year-old daughter who refuses to wake up, so I was wondering if you could bring your jumper cables. I would prefer cables with the strongest volts. (pause) Oh, you do? That would be great. Thanks!”

Can you imagine the response from AAA?

Why is this woman shouldering responsibility to wake an adult? Luann is supposed to be in college now, presumably age 18. Let her be late and learn from consequences! There comes a point when you have got to stop raising your kid.

I did a review of two and a half years of Luann strips. What I found was that, with few exceptions, Luann’s immature behaviors only occur on Sundays. There are many examples of Luann having a clean room (5-26-15, 4-6-15, 4-7-15, 4-8-15, 4-9-15, 4-10-15, 4-11-15, 3-2-15, 3-3-15, 3-4-15, 3-5-15, 3-6-15, 3-7-15, 1-2-16), and showing other responsible behavior such as being made the lead teacher at summer day camp (5-21-15), cleaning up at her job (7-25-15), carrying Quill’s suitcase for him (8-12-15), winning an art contest (10-3-15), babysitting with Shannon (1-8-16), and cleaning up her work area while Tiffany doesn’t help (2-27-17, 2-28-17, 3-1-17 and 3-2-17). She has also helped her mother and father clean up their warehouse, and enlisted her friends to give them free cleaning service. My thoughts are that these Sunday comics (or many of them) were drawn years ago, and depict Luann as a high school girl. She seems to have grown out of it on the weekday strips except for episodes of youthful exuberance which should diminish with time. So, Greg is to blame for Luann’s slothful habits.

I admire Nancy for finding a novel threat to use in trying to get Luann up and out of bed at who-knows-what-time-it-is? Maybe it’s 2:00 PM and time for Lu’s favorite TV soap opera [yes, I know they don’t really have those anymore; maybe she has some favorite vintage show on one of those Old Time TV channels]….
