Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for November 27, 2016
Transcript:
Marigold: *ahem* I am the very model of a modern magic unicorn. My scarf and warmers constitute my standard winter uniform. My entrances are heralded by trumpets and a flugelhorn. I've eaten magic bagels and my horn can write in cuneiform. I make up for my lack of hands with magic ingenuity. Manipulating objects with a starting acuity. I'm also rather stunning in a way that's undeniable. To stare at me in wonder is completely justifiable. It is all true. Phoebe: I know.

Sung to the tune of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, if you’re uncultured.
Wilde Bill over 7 years ago
Gilbert & Sullivan as sung by Sideshow Bob.

It looks like Dana may be suffering some kind of creator breakdown due to the election, hence all the rerun strips.

Am I the only who’s trying to actually hear Marigolds singing voice in my mind? Ooh I bet it sounds lovely!
BlizzJaster over 7 years ago
It’s a song from Sergeant Pepper, duh.

I had a chance recently to ask Dana about the repeats. She said that they’re only from before the comic started national syndication and that any changes in dialogue or the artwork is because she works closer with an editor now, so sometimes they recommend changes.

I sang Sir Joseph Porter in high school, but this is from Pirates of Penzance. When our girls were at home we wore out a VHS tape of that.

I saw “Pirates of Penzance” not too long ago, and this is perfect. The scansion is right on the money, and the words fit right in with the cadence. Very well done, Dana.

Main issue with singing in text – you need to know the song that fits.

This is actually a variation of the original Sunday comic (see Dec 2, 2012, for the original). Some of the words in the song are different and the drawing is slightly different (scarf and legwarmers have been added).

With JanC above, allow me to congratulate on the parody, Dana. This is not any easy song to do anything with, and I do love it!

Best Sunday comic ever. Phoebe’s face in the last panel is the icing on the cake.

Clever and hilarious, as always. Keep ’em coming—this is one of the best strips that exists.

A bit ashamed to admit it, I recognised this not from knowing the original opera, but instead from the Mordin Solus rendition from the game Mass Effect.I am not ashamed to claim It is a game everyone must play through though, otherwise they’d be “uncultured”.

Perfect! Just PERFECT!! I gotta save this one!

I could’ve sworn the original lyrics of this parody were different. “I am the very model of a modern magic unicorn, I’ve information, magic, and I never wear a uniform.”

This is my absolute favorite strip, the parody of I Am the Very Model is brilliant!
