Luann’s top looks like a QR code. Maybe if she scans herself, she can get a coupon for those movie tickets.

Luann and Bernice appear to be into Cafe Kablooie, where there is a long line. It appears that TJ’s venture is super successful. With the theme being school’s out for summer and there joy about it, I have a feeling they are going to find themselves somehow involved in it although Luann said she would be teaching over the summer. That brings in Pru Leslie, the big guy (name escapes me now), maybe Mr. Gray, a whole panoply of new arcs. If anything it is interesting to see the cafe so busy for those who thought it would be a flop.

Party poopers! I still love summer and it is over 100 degrees today. I think we are programmed from 18+ years of summer vacations to be happy. Work is part of the curse handed down from Adam and Eve; being happy anyway is our choice.

I was surprised that some thought it was a line to the movies, based on the accessories of the others in line.

It’s a lunch line, but I thought Cafe Kablooie was inside the theatre. Did they make it into a variation on the food truck? That seems to bore TJ and doesn’t bode well for the cafe.

Nothing in the news so far on the manhunt around here late last night. News blackout for some reason? The search helicopters w spotlights were flying for a long time and that is very, very unusual. I can recall that only once before in over thirty years here and that one was a life and death situation with a missing person who needed meds to stay alive (but he turned out to have fallen into a frozen river). A friend who has an early morning shift said that cops checked him and his car out w lights when he traveled, also that a pole and wires were down on a nearby road that leads from a major highway about a mile away, with the listed down time right to be related to the manhunt. Very, very unusual… Puzz, thanks for your note late last night.

N-G… your comment of… “Haven’t felt the joy of much of anything in years.”…. caused me to feel truly sad for you. I am not trying to overstep boundaries here, but I do sincerely believe that living a life without any joy is not a healthy way to live. Have you ever considered being assessed for potential depressive illness? Some forms of depression respond to SRUI medications very successfully. It is just something to consider.

7The week looks quite promising if we are going to be spending it at The Fuse! All sorts of interesting things could happen! The line of the clientele at “Kafe Kablooee” looks rather eclectic to me. We have a person who looks like a businessman, Bernie and Luann, a woman who (to me) gives off a bit of an “artsy” vibe, a construction worker fellow, and what appears to be a Mom with two kids.Initially, like a few others, I had thought the comic was set at a movie theater and that is where the folks were waiting in line. The darkness of the background lent to the “movie lobby” aspect to a degree. It seems a bit “dark” for Kafe Kablooee, however as most restaurants (especially quick service resturaunts, which I think K2 is) are brightly colored. So, the array of different people waiting to eat and/or drink at K2 still has me a bit perplexed. I guess it could make sense if this is a lunch crowd just getting food, but the darkness of the background gives me the feel of it being more like an evening time period. But, then the folks would likely all be dressed very differently… in more casual clothes for several of them. And I would not think the construction fellow would wear his construction clothes to an evening event at The Fuse…. unless perhaps he was going to be part of a revival of the stage act for the singing of YMCA perhaps :) .But, the juxtaposition of Bernie and Luann celebrating the freedom of Summer amidst all the people going about their normal work-a-day lives where Summer is mostly just another day of work got me to thinking about that form of celebration. As a professor, I have to admit that I DO very much get a similar feeling of celebration like Bernie and Luann each Summer. It really is not so much that I get a Summer of freedom…. I still teach half of the Summer, and still conduct research, grant writing, and other service things all Summer…. but for me…. the pacing does relax a bit and it still does feel quite freeing and fun…. and the warm weather is wonderful too.

As PipeTobacco alludes to in one of his paragraphs,The point of this comic is to juxtapose those who work hard day in and day out, including the mom with small kids, to Luann and Bernice who have the luxury of enjoying free time in the summer.

Or to put it succinctly, it’s an ironic juxtaposition between what Luann is feeling and the reality of the settled adult world where summer is just a part of life as is the other seasons.

N-G… I am glad that what you had said earlier was overstated a bit. I can understand the feelings of melancholy… as I experience that quite abundantly myself. I have been working for quite a while to learn techniques that help me to “pull myself out of” a state of melancholy… and happily for me, I typically can regulate my thoughts better now so that I can usually move away from the melancholy emotions when they become too harsh.

I don’t know why Bernice is so enthusiastic about proclaiming “Finals done!” We saw no one in this strip do any studying at all, or take any exams. Instead, Bernice spend the last month plotting a stupid scheme to be alone with Piro, and Gunther spent it being coached by Tiffany on how to pursue Bernice. Zero attention was paid to academics, so why is Bernice so relieved it’s over? It never even happened! (Luann didn’t spend any time that we saw studying for finals either, of course, but then no one really expected her to do so.)

It seems the Fuse is both a place for local arts and a general community center and they have a busy lunch crowd…. nice!…. I’m guessing we are going to see Leslie Knox working his job… whatever it is. Maybe he will take Luann and Bernice’s order. That Luann puts emphasis on her art portfolio over all other exams and classes makes it seem like she will become an art major… I hope.

I finally found out why there was a search helicopter low overhead for much of 20 minutes in the wee hours. The State Police helicopter unit was called in by a NEIGHBORING town in relation to a car theft ring. Theives drove to a location close to us where they crashed (that pole) a stolen car. I am sorry but having search helicopters w flood lights right overhead at low altitude at that sort of hour jolting people from sleep in many cases when the people were not being sought for a violent crime was perhaps overdoing it. I guess they figured the escaped people might get desperate. What worries me more than for local residents like us is that there is a Veteran’s Hospital not all that far away, though the news writeup sounds like they may not have flown very close to that. It coukd be hard for some there, though, if they did.

Just got a mail from a friend in the First Aid Squad who called in when he saw the article that came up. The fleeing stolen car did not hit only the pole, but also another vehicle w two in that car injured. Two thieves fled on foot. So, i guess we know also why the town did not use the reverse 911 system to alert people but was telling those who called the non-emergency number to stay inside w doors locked. We hope the injured were not severely injured.

-alk about reality check, futurecast for Toni:.Look at the lady at the far right of the last panel. Toni in 6 years with little Brad junior and little Tonianne…

I am totally puzzled about why you would suggest that. First off, at the rate things are going, it could be another 6 years before they get married. Secondly, while Brad may hope to have kids, we don’t know what Toni’s idea is. Remember that she and her brother ended up on their own early because their parents died. Some kids coming from that kind of background never really get a strong ‘family’ picture in their heads.

And finally, why the automatic assumption that the full time parent would be Toni? Or that both of them wouldn’t be working, and calling on Luann for help? Isn’t that kind of the pattern now, with Shannon?
