We don’t have this obsession with sport here in UK schools, and no sport scholarships. We still have kids who think you’re nobody unless you’re Good at Games, and popular university athletes – but those university athletes had better keep up their academic grades or they’ll be thrown out on their cauliflower ears.

I can see Millie playing the drums instead of the saxophone.

Instruments are bought (or rented) by parents, not the school.

Not always the coach-some of the parents are worse about making the kids play when not physically able. The emphasis on college athletic scholarships and the obscene amounts of money thrown at professional athletes helps drive the mentality to succeed at any cost for those few minutes in the sun. There is a tremendous issue in this country where success is rewarded while effort is not valued as highly. The opposite is the “participation” award where you get recognized for just showing up.

School sports teams have fundraisers, too. And the booster clubs (read: players’ parents) put tons of money into the programs, too. It’s not like they have a blank check from the school district.
