    As I recall, for a spark to jump across air takes about 10,000 volts per inch, so a spark that jumps 1/4 inch would be about 2500 volts, albeit with virtually no amperage. Now, use a lot of small jolts to energize some large capacitors and you might have something….

    When I was designing phones for a PBX, the worst case scenario depicted (whether true or not) was, “A fat woman in Minnesota in the middle of winter can build up to 30,000 volts of static.” I think it had to do with very dry air and a more even layer of adipose tissue. We had to design for that eventuality to keep from frying the IC’s inside the phones.

    It won’t work. I think that was Edison’s whole point when he suggested the electric chair as a means of using alternating current to kill people, thus demonstrating that his favored direct current was safer for consumers
