“ALL of the accidents that the GOOGLE cars (their driverless cars have been on bay area roads in the past year) have gotten into have been the FAULT of the OTHER driver—the ones driven by humans”.In those cases, the other driver may have been officially “at fault”, but the self-driving car didn’t manage avoid the accident. I suspect that in at least some of those situations a human would have found an “extraordinary” way to prevent the accident. (But I freely admit that another human driver in the same situation might well have made it worse.)
Heard (the other day), that a self-driving car (I think it was in San Fran.) was doing 25 in a 35 mph zone and backing up traffic. Cop pulled it over to issue a ticket but couldn’t because the owner wasn’t driving, he was in the back seat. Another plus for the self-driving car, eh?
an automated car only has to do as well as the average driver.Unfortunately an automated car involved in a “fender bender” would be headline news whereas the average driver wouldn’t even rate a mention.

A self-drive car comes with an optional spouse or mother-in-law backseat driver.

from my observation over the years, it seems to me that most cars have never really had a driver behind the wheel to begin with!

Thanks, Chuck. Not the first time I got the wrong information…I’ll delve further before I post anything like that again. :-)
