Reminds me of the news from California, every time there’s a mudslide/earthquake/wildfire that destroys all those millionaire-priced homes. People swear they’ll rebuild right there “because it’s so beautiful.” Uh-huh.

I see this as more of a comment on the real world,

Why do people keep building in areas that are so unstable? Repeatedly building in flood plains, under mudslide cliffs, overlooking a seaside cliff or on the side of a volcano. The worst part is these people, once their homes are ruined, expect us to pay for repairs or rebuilding through government pay-outs or increases in insurance premiums.

By Albert Einstein’s definition this is insanity. He said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So let’s keep building cities on major fault lines and party on.

Big, heartening point out of this whole small portrayal seems to be – at last – seeing the small family assembled on a relaxing seaside vacation. And Dad’s reaction when he sees the shadow’s source ! Priceless .

Wow, not a single mention of the Japan or Indonesia tsunamis in the comments. Have we already forgotten? While I realize this was written decades before, still a little ouchie to see it in the new context.

This certainly illustrates the risks of building an entire city at a location where tsunamis occur every few minutes. When will we ever learn?

Interesting little tidbit: New Orleans is built on the Mississippi delta. A delta region is a natural receptor for large storms, because they quickly dissipate them, absorbing their impact. To build there is just asking for trouble, defeating nature’s own mechanism to handle such storms properly. Especially large blank walls called hotels.

When I was a kid I’d make skyscrapers out of empty cereal boxes, then set them on fire to play “Towering Inferno.” So I can understand why Calvin is having fun doing this!

Stupid is building on a floodplain. Downright lunacy is the federal govt. insuring the buildings.

After some locale is flooded, the talking Bobbleheads on TV news will say “…was inundated with water…”

If anyone still uses Usenet, alt.binaries world languages has tons of grammar and usage books scanned and uploaded. From very elementary to advanced studies, many long out of print. In almost any language, ranging from ancient, such as Babylonian, Egyptian, Sumerian, Latin, to constructed languages, Esperanto, Vola Puk, and Klingon. The English section is enormous.

Religion and politics haven’t entered this thread yet, so to remedy that deplorable situation I submit the following.

My brother makes Rush Limbaugh and his ilk look like ultra right wing liberals. Religious wise Pat Robertson and Benny Henn are High Church. Everytime New Orleans is devastated by a hurricane, my brother preaches a sermon declaring that it is God’s will and punishment for their sins.He says that New Orleans is just a “den of iniquity” and brings God’s wrath upon themselves.Ok, now can someone please tell me what a “den of iniquity” is?

Politics, now that is a subject full of talk. So to quickly end this, it is Obama’s, Bush’s, Clinton’s, you choose, fault.

    My meds just kicked in.

I am of the opinion folks who intentionally build and live in areas of the planet with frequent life threatening maladies are just testing the waters (pun intended) for when the next world cataclysm occurs.

    We are definitely overdue!

    Meanwhile, back to the comics…

Way too many people do the exact same thing as adults and wait for the government to bail them out – again.

The first panel looks to me very much like the Boston skyline, I see at least three buildings that look familiar and the harbor is also similar.

I originally thought of Minneapolis, looking over the Mississippi from St Paul, with the IDS building standing tall! Of course, Minneapolis is not a coastal city!

    Not yet, anyway…
