I thought of the same thing. (If I were Andy, I would’ve guessed GONE WITH THE WIN[E]. Seriously, B.C.? GONE WITH THE JESUS? How do you get JESUS from WIN_?)

There is already an “O” visible in “GONE”, so “WINO” clearly cannot be the solution. Andy may be a provincial drunk, but it is an insult to his character to make him that stupid.

Hey, why did BC turn into Peter? :)

Pastis hasn’t read BC since Johnny Hart died seven years ago. Up until then, he used the strip to preach his born-again message. After his death, his kids took over the strip and returned it to caveman jokes. Seven years ago, Stephan.

I don’t see why «GONE WITH THE WIN» can’t be the complete answer.

Then again everyone could be looking too deep. It may just be a satire against stereotypes and the details about the puzzle don’t matter.

My first thought was that it was another jab by newer artists against the classic strips that keep running long after they should have been retired.

This one is a head-scratcher… since Andy said “@*#” why didn’t BC say “Gone with the “*#@”? Why did the word “Jesus” get bleeped for Andy but not for BC?

BC was and is written on a different level, and for a different audience, than Pearls. BC mocked mean-spiritedness, and Pearls celebrates it. More a generational difference than anything else.

I thought it was to point up how very religious people see Jesus in everything. I have some relatives who try to interject Jesus into every situation. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

“The Wind Done Gone”, the satire that Margaret Mitchell’s estate tried to suppress, was much better!

    PC guy got it correct

Andy Capp said “Jesus” is panel 4. While you can use the word “Jesus” in the comics, you can’t use it as an exclamation.

Peter (or is that BC?) interpreted that as an answer and is questioning it. I think it would have been simpler to understand if he had said “Gone with the *#?”, but Pastis likes to point out the arbitrary nature of comic censoring “rules”.

Time to move away from the politicking going on here and onto the real matter at hand. Does Larry, or is it Bob, come up weeth right anser?

It’s an old movie (1939), so maybe these youngsters aren’t familiar with it? (I’ve only seen it a few times on TV, and not lately.)

Other than Easter and Christmas, BC is never overtly pro-Jesus. This was a really lame one Stephan. You’re better than this.

I was going to come in to give you all the benefit of the genuine correct answer that would have shown exactly who in this thread is right and who is seriously mistaken, drawing on my vast wisdom and years of experience in the cold, cruel world.

Then I remembered: “Who the **** cares?”

A wino is gone but not forgotten……..Andy can hardly be “exaggerated” as a drunk, of course, but Peter (replacing BC in either a mistake or a “miracle”) is definitely being exaggerated. I never could stand the Anno Domini episodes of “BC” with their extremely awkward preaching, but I don’t recall the main cast doing all that much of it.

Lately it seems “Pearls” has sunk to a lower level than when it was really funny. Seems most all cartoonists run out of ideas and try to be more outrageous to keep the interest. Wish he would look at two-three years ago and see the quality of his work at that time.

“Gone with the Jesus,” seriously, BC? The last word is four letters long with the first three being WIN, not five with the first three being JES. And the category is Famous Films. At least Andy was close with “Gone with the Wino.” Why couldn’t you have gotten it wrong with “Gone with the Wine?”

Actually, come to thing of it “Gone with the Wine” could be Larry’s answer.

Hmm…“wind” can also refer to the Holy Spirit, so it seems that Peter (aka BC) should have gotten it.

@JPuzzleWhiz: First “Jesus” is not a profanity.>> It is when used as an exclamation, like Andy did.Second, Andy did not say"Jesus".>> If he didn’t, then there is no joke at all there. And third, that’s Peter, not B. C. (B. C. has red hair.)>> Sorry, I stopped reading BC as a child, so I’m not familiar with their names. But why would Pastis not choose the title character?

Oh, LOL. I get it now. Andy must have said Jesus, that’s where BC got if from. I was looking at what Andy said and why would he say Galaxy – Star – Hash – Galaxy and not Saturn in place of Hash. ☺
