It is startling, the number of people who believe in Evolution who do not believe in Survival of the Fittest.

“Survival of the fittest” actually Darwin got it wrong. It’s “survival of the most adaptable”. This isn’t my own observation but nevertheless a much better explanation of why some species become extinct and others prosper.

Evolution does not just keep going on spontaneously, it requires stressors which select for variations in a species. Apes, Neanderthals, Homo Sapiens did not evolve from each other; rather, they all evolved from a common ancestor species. Stressors caused branching in the family tree. Some branches died off, some kept growing. If the Earth faces some great change that gives survival/reproductive advantages over a long enough period of time, than those features will predominate. That’s the overly-simplified way that evolution works.
