Don’t worry – we’ll allow plenty of time for people on either side of the Border to emigrate to the side more in keeping with their politics. That means Idaho will lose its Neo-Nazis, and there will be a brain drain from Austin.

There’s a lovely little SF story where the ENTIRE population of Texas packed up, lock, stock and barrell and relocated to another Planet. Taking the ‘Sacred Stones’ of the Alamo with them, and re-building it on ‘New Texas.’

Retaining their ‘feisty’ independance and their ‘Heavily-Armed’ neutrality they became something of a thorn in the side of the Galactic powers.

It’s by H. Beam Piper, and titled “A Planet For Texans”

    Find it and Enjoy!

I have a few progressive friends (and a brother) in Texas who are shaking their heads. Every state has progressive residents, and I’m sure they’d appreciate a more progressive state. However, there’s this thing about home and family (not to mention jobs) that makes it hard to move. Sigh. It’s hard for them, but when Texas is expelled, they should know there are many in the US who will sympathize with their quandary.

Demography is destiny they say. Texas is becoming a Latino-majority state. At the moment, Latinos are 38% of the state (the younger part), and Anglos are 45% (the older and richer part), but given that the Anglos are dying out without reproducing themselves as the Latinos, those figures will flip in another decade. As it is, Anglos are already a minority, albeit a dominate one, as they are in other parts of the country. Non-Latino Whites are a minority in Texas, California, and Hawaii. They have a shrinking majority of less than 60% in Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York. You can see why the GOP has a problem if they can’t attract more Asians, Latinos, and African Americans, or they can’t discourage these populations from voting. The times they are a-changing, as they always do.

An interesting question: Can the U.S. Federal Government constitutionally banish a state from the Union? My feeling is the answer is “No,” for most of the same reasons a state cannot unilaterally secede. In any case, I can’t imagine a plausible scenario in which the rest of the country would expel an unwilling state from the Union.

We, in Texas, are at least wise enough to give our governor very little real power, vesting the real power in the lt. governor. And when we tire of a governor, we send them off to be president. And ya’ll vote for them. We sure don’t do it alone. Now who’s dumb?

Now who’s dumb?”.First, we didn’t vote for Bush, he was appointed once and stole one election. Perry went as far as his limited intellect would take him, and even the republicans didn’t want him..Second, from what I hear, he’s spent most of his time in office consolidating power through appointments, even if it is powerless position.

OK, NG & mt, hope this helps:.DeeBeeS said, 1 day agoLet’s see what the consequences are for secession (armed response aside…….. for the moment):

All federal military bases close and all personnel moved to the other 49 states.

All Social Security checks stopped at once.

All Medicaid payments to Texas stopped.

All college loans backed by federal loan guarantees called in for full payment at once.

All monies for infrasturctures (highways, roads, bridges, etc.) stopped all at once.

All educationsl financial support funds from the federal government to the state for colleges, and public education at all levels immediately stopped.

All Medicare payments to Texas doctors stopped at once.

All savings bonds held by Texans labled as “junk status”; i.e., cannot be traded or sold due to lack of an economic coopertation treaty between the new “Republic of Texas” and the U.S.

All research and other grants to Texas universities stopped and recalled by the federal government.

All commercial traffic coming to the U.S. through the port of Houston to be refused at the port, pending any economic treaty between Texas and U.S.

Sales of all commodities (cotton, wheat, soybeans, etc.) to the U.S. stopped at once pending same economic treaty.

All U.S. government property in Texas (Natinal parks, military basis, national forests, etc., etc.,) closed to “foreigners” i.e, Texans.

The list goes on and on, but you get the idea.

Be careful what you wish for Texians, you might just get it!!
