When I became a police officer, I discovered that dead animals, cats included, are picked up and disposed of. If your cat is gone for a long time, chances are it was run over. That being said, I had TWO cats that ran away. One would show up every six weeks or so, obviously well cared for, hang out for a couple of days, then go away again. We called him our “Timeshare Cat.” Then I transitioned to indoor cats. One got out, and was gone for a long time. One day, I spotted him while on a fire call at an apartment building. I scooped him up and took him home. I got a call to go see the chief. He asked me why I stole this old lady’s cat! I told him it was my cat, and showed her pictures of when he lived with me. She wasn’t happy. He got out again, and went back to her. Because SHE let him be an outdoor cat. You can’t help but feel a little rejected. One day I saw him crossing the road in front of the patrol car. He’s lucky I’m such a nice guy…

He wouldn’t be carrying a sign like that if King Tut was missing.
