I started to snark all over this issue, but it’s actually serious, so OK, lets be serious.
It’s patently obvious to anyone without their head in the sand that the GOP (state or overall, doesn’t matter, doesn’t even matter if it’s a big donor doing it for plausible deniability) has hired investigators to go over every imaginable detail of the top Democrats in the state, looking for any hint of anything that makes these guys unpalatable to Democrats. This dug up data is being used in an attempt to reverse the results of the governor’s race, after the fact.
Given that no reporter nor any person “vetting” the candidates found any of this BEFORE the election was concluded, a major effort must have been made AFTER the election to find this stuff. Thus, it’s obvious it went above and beyond the usual “dirt search”.
Therefore, two factors come into play.
First: Are we really going to allow every election to be rerun after the fact by people digging up or manufacturing dirt? Especially given cases of “he said she said” with no second persons or corroboration whatsoever? This is a serious question, and for damn sure if this happens in Virginia, it’s going to happen in other states. Hell, it’s being done to Warren right this minute!
Either we need to do one hell of a better effort on vetting, or we need to decide that “after the election” crap doesn’t count until the next election. Or throw it all over, give the country to the Repubs, and quit pretending to be serious about politics.
Second: There’s a HUGE asssumption being made here, that I object to in the most strenous way imaginable. We are ASSUMING that any random Republican in the line is pure, just because they haven’t had the Department of Dirty Tricks spend a few hundred thousand examining their backgrounds!
Really, if that’s how the Democratic Party is going to do business, we need to just give up. If we’re ASSUMING the Republicans are better people than Democrats, what’s the point?
