This is set in the Southern Hemisphere where winter is summer. Summer holidays starting in January in Australia is like them starting in July here in the UK.
With respect to Jason’s side comment on choosing an illness you like:
“[Dr. Samuel] Johnson once described the ideal happiness which he would choose if he were regardless of futurity. My own choice, with the same reservation, would be to read the Italian epic—to be always convalescent from some small illness and always seated in a window that overlooked the sea, there to read these poems [Orlando Innamorato, Orlando Furioso, and Gerusalemme Liberata] eight hours of each happy day.” — C. S. Lewis
(The ideal happiness Dr. Johnson had described was this: “I would spend my life in driving briskly in a post-chaise with a pretty woman; but she should be one who could understand me, and would add something to the conversation.”)

The funny thing about this strip is that the kids went back to school for their first term of the year yesterday (Monday).
