Carrot cake gets a much worse rap than it deserves.
Regular kids birthday party cake is usually a bland dry sponge made from not much besides flour and sugar with frosting made from nothing at all except sugar.
Carrot cake has a much better texture, usually a lot of extra flavour, and most often has a cream frosting. And, of course, there’s still a ton of sugar these days.
I’ve always though the texture and taste of carrots was well-suited to desserts, especially when chopped or shredded finely. As a student, I used to make a dish called “chocolate mulch” in the cafeteria from shredded carrots and chocolate pudding.

I remember being surprised when I first tried carrot cake that it was actually good. Still, chocolate might be a safer choice for a four-year-old’s birthday party.

My grandma had a few special recipes that were better than anything I’ve ever tasted. My favorite was her Bundt carrot cake, made with jars of strained carrots. It was so rich and moist and incredibly delicious … no frosting … that would have been overkill. Even when I was really little, it was my favorite dessert. It must’ve been terribly fattening. This grandmother didn’t worry about things like calories and cholesterol, but no one I knew in the 50s and 60s did. I often went to her house for lunch when I was in high school, for her 3 egg western omelettes.
You go to a birthday party at Dill’s house, across the street on your own, and then you complain? What did you expect from a Wedekind party, Alice?!
