Joan: What are you reading? Wally: A story on aging animals in the zoo... Wally: "Coco, a 60-year-old chimp, receives the gentle care and medical attention worthy of her years." Joan: Maybe we can move to a ZOO when we're old. Wally: "Coco has never been asked if she had any pre-existing conditions."

If anyone asked her, she’d throw poo at them and bite.

That’s not so different from running calls at the Retirement Home.

So if I want tax subsidized health care, I will have to live like an animal in a cage?

OK, here are the facts. If the insurance company knows they have to pay out for pre-existing conditions, they know they have to get that money from somewhere, and the only way is by increasing premiums. In essence, insurance is a common pool, paid in advance, ready to be paid back out as needed. If people decide they really want to pay more out in advance, then OK, but they really need to realize that is what they will be doing, rather than imagine that money magically comes from nowhere.

Perhaps I’m the only one in the Portland area who didn’t realize until this moment that Jan is an Oregonian. As soon as i saw “Coco the Chimp” it was very clear. Coco is an elderly matron chimp at the Oregon Zoo. Only a local would know that. Heck of a deal. Given the tone of the strip it makes a lot of sense. I love the side-swipe at our ridiculous health care system. And we call ourselves a first world country.

@Philogia: You might also notice that teh paper in Wally’s hands is the “REG GUARD”. Eugene’s newspaper is the Register-Guard. Jan’s definitely letting us know she’s a local.

“They say it’s all happening at the zoo, I do believe it, I do believe it’s true. Hmmm…” From Simon and Garfunkel’s At the Zoo.(I wish I knew how to get musical notes on my screen.)

Jan: I’m not surprised at your political sympathies, given that you live in the People’s Republic of Eugene, but I do wish you’d knock off the political strips. I’m starting to feel like I’m reading blueoregon.com.

Yes, the republicans don’t care if we get healthcare or not. They just vote to please their masters.

At least an animal can be euthanized when their quality of life deteriorates to the point of needless suffering. But Obama care will include that, just not as painlessly.
philogaia about 12 years ago
@Milestheglassguy Of course. I thought I recognized the paper. I haven’t been in Eugene for a few years but I should have caught that. How fun.
