I adopted my small dog, a 12-lb schipperke, when she was full grown but had never been trained.

She was a very affectionate but headstrong and…um….active little thing, who refused to listen to my commands to stay down in the car seat.

As soon as my attention was on the road she’d jump up on top of the passenger-side seat back and stand there…

If I made a quick stop, this is exactly what would happen.

I tried rewards, threats, a harness, a short leash to the seat belt…. some didn’t work and some made her howl inconsolably…

Anything attached to her collar also made her pull till she was choking.

I even tried making lots of quick (though gentle) stops on purpose, so she’d fall more often…. but she loved the game.

She lived to be almost 15, and never gave it up till her last few feeble months.

Once Little Mickey tracked, stalked and took down a nine pound river rat. The stealth of the hunt, the vicious swipe to the hind quarter as the miserable vermin fled in terror , the lunging strike to the neck, the roll over take down and the grinding sound of the neck bone breaking still resonate with Mickey like the sweet dream it was. The midnight chase through the urban jungle, the treachery of the enemy, the alluring calls of the mythical Sirens, half cat and half devil woman, beckoning him onward, nearer and nearer, the temptations of the flesh and glory of the conquest dissolve into fleeting moments of memory. But, now…a nap, a moment of rest, the peacefulness of age and wisdom, the tranquility of a safe harbor and the blessings of his guardian angel, seem somehow beyond his grasp.

    Nice recollection S man…

In a previous life as a sailor and educated man of worldly travels, I too ocassionaly partook of the sweet and hoppy Nectar of Neptune… quite frequently with the same results… resulting in adventures much too graphic to share in this forum….
