In the last panel, Hobbes’s paws are still suspended in midair. Calvin has kicked the board right out from under them.Based on where Calvin is standing and the direction that the board is going, in real life you would have to use your right foot to kick the board in that direction from under Hobbes’s paws. But it seems like Bill Watterson has drawn Calvin’s left foot doing the kicking so that he looks better to the reader, sort of like the way that actors on a stage try to keep facing toward the audience as much as possible. If Calvin were kicking with his right foot, Watterson would have to show Calvin’s body from the side with his right foot crossed over in front of his left one. Then we would be seeing his face from the side instead of the front, limiting the expressions that Watterson could draw on Calvin’s face. The shadow under Calvin indicates that he has kicked with such force that his body has gone straight up off the floor, a la cartoon physics. It’s like the way that Calvin’s wagon bounces along above the ground, or his dad’s car rises up off the pavement as it goes over hills.

Calvin would sure be better than the recent and present occupants, especially if Hobbs was Chief of Staff (he wouldn’t make a good VP).

@HobbesI can look at the last panel, and see it as Calvin’s right foot kicking across his body, which accounts for the twisting motion that leaves both his arms off to his right….just sayin’, that’s how it looks to me..

Isn’t is interesting that: 1. no matter what the content of the strip, it evolves into politics or religion and 2. it is always the ‘other side’s’ fault?

Think on this: 1. change ourselves first – it begins with ‘me’; 2. sending love into the universe works better than hate; 3. we are all the same, our souls are all connected; 4. embrace everything spiritual because religions are man-made organizations & rules; and 5. accept others, we all have our own opinions based on different experiences.

Has anyone ever thought that Hobbes MIGHT be real? Only close-minded adults see a stuffed tiger?

P.S.: I tend to ignore those commentators that make religion or politics intrude, especially those who do so incessantly—but when the comment is germane to the strip, I will be more tolerant. Sometimes the discussion is appropriate, but more often it really isn’t.

@jeffsxQ: I see what you are saying about Calvin’s right foot kicking across his body, and if I look at it long enough, I can make it look like that also. However, I just noticed that it looks like the instep of his kicking shoe is curved like a left shoe, so I’m still sticking with my original theory.Regardless, it seems like an excellent topic for distracting others from the political discussion. Maybe we could all divide up into the left shoe camp and the right shoe camp, and discuss this issue instead of politics. We could call ourselves the Lefties and the Righties…………. Oh, wait………..never mind.

If I’m to believe The Blind Side, you can do more good owning a real-estate business and a string of Taco Bell/KFC franchises than you can as president.

Hobbes (the poster): I haven’t been online since Tuesday so I only just a few minutes ago saw the “Peanuts” comic you left for me in response to something I had written earlier.

Donuts, especially the raspberry-filled variety, are the absolute bane of my existence. I love those things so much that they’re just like crack cocaine to me! I can’t go in a store anywhere containing a bakery without hearing them call out my name. Sometimes I can resist but most of the time, I’ve got one in my possession as I’m leaving the store. Luckily (for me and my waistline), I don’t make it to stores like that very often (maybe once every other month or so) so that makes it a whole lot easier to keep the donut weight off!

    ;-)

@Hobbes— Your position is probably the most likely, but to accept the ‘reality’ of the strip, I’d say that Calvin has performed an outside roundhouse kick with his left foot, as demonstrated by the direction his arms are twisting and the fact that the board is flying off to his forward-left side.

@mod35: So, it sounds like you are saying that we are both Lefties, but you are in the outside roundhouse subgroup.Or, perhaps in-between panels 3 and 4, Calvin ran around behind the board, next to Hobbes, and then kicked the board with his left foot. But I’m not too sure about that one, because I was thinking that maybe Calvin’s hands were still in that position from holding the Ouija board mover (or whatever it’s called) right before he jumped up and kicked the board. Also, Hobbes still has his hands in position, but he would have had plenty of time to retract them if Calvin had run around next to him.Clearly, this requires a lot more deep thought.I sometimes wonder what Bill Watterson would think if he were to read these analytical comments about why we think he might have done things the way he did. I imagine that sometimes we are on track with his thinking, and sometimes we are way off base.
