^^ As to how old the strip is Bill Watterson stopped producing Calvin & Hobbes towards the end of 1995, and even then it seemed to refer to an earlier more innocent (Calvin innocent I hear you cry) time.

Since then it has been an awesome set of re-runs.

Uh oh, Dad’s in trouble. A VCR is a real collector’s item, and pretty much impossible to find. (I’ll sell him one of mine!!)

I sitll have my VCR, but not to record and watch. It just a connector between my HTPC and 20" CRT TV (from 1996!).

This comic strip was from 1986 (visible in the space between the first and second panels). At least he didn’t say he wanted a Betamax, he would have regretted that decision if he got it.

… I just had a thought. Try reading these with the idea of Cavin being the "Dad now and the roll of Calvin is being played by his son Calvin Jr. Wow! Paying for your raisen sure takes on a whole new meaning don’t it?

If this could be done you would of course have to replace VCR with DVD…

If this were today, he’d of course ask for a Wii.

At the time this strip was printed, VCRs were selling in about the $300 range, but competition and mass production brought them down to about $40 before DVDs came out, again in the $300 range before Comp. and MP brought them down to about $40 today. I still record programs with the VCR and then, when have time, view them and cut the commercials while storing them on DVDs. K-Mart still has an ample supple of tapes in this area, but I just keep reusing my old ones after storage on DVDs.

Summary: If you want to be first to own something, prepare to pay dearly for it.

In today’s age, I think VCR could be substituted for iPad. Question… how many of our kids will never understand this comic due to not knowing what VCR stands for…

Dad sure doesn’t let Calvin get him all excited. It’s that dry, deadpan delivery that makes the comedy.

20 years ago a VCR was expensive like BlueRay is today and tomorrow will be obsolete. Single unit VCR’s are no longer produced. You can only get them in a combo VCR/DVD..for now. I wouldn’t touch touch this strip with a 10 foot pole.

We all want something, but whether or not we’re gonna get it is another matter entirely…..
