First this teacher called a student’s mother’s rich friend, without her knowledge or permission, and asked him to fund not only the student’s but his own stay in Europe….
br>And that was AFTER being told by the student that she and her mother had decided against the trip.
And now he’s asking the mother out, which I’m sure is against school policy, as it is almost everywhere else.
So to me, this guy goes beyond cheap, beyond poor, and right over into scumbag territory.
I would hate to see all that glossed over and him becoming a sympathetic character.
I know Annie likes the idea of them dating….. but Lila has already shown doubts about Annie’s lack of discernment when it comes to right and wrong.
JWF, if you feel that I’m being too harsh on this character, or taking him wrong, I apologise, as it’s your strip.
I’m NOT judgmental — if I can give a person a break I do.
But I’ve not seen any mention of his bad behavior beyond Lila’s mild rebuke, or any attempt on his part at redemption.
Hi SusanSunshine: You’re not being judgmental at all. As you know, I definitely try to create characters with many faults. I think that’s true to life and makes it interesting. Trace clearly has some issues ;-) as do most of the characters in “Lila” :-)

He can’t afford a lot – he’s a schoolteacher, remember?

rhm — Trace is Annie’s teacher, the one who sent the flower.
He’s not quoting anyone; Lila is reading the note, so the words are in quotes.

That’s not “mom’s rich friend”, it’s one of Annie’s adoptive dads…

There are times when a dozen roses can seem ostentatious and a single rose very elegant.

I’m with Elderflower, a dozen is flashin’ cash.A single rose, that she knows probably cost him a meal…

Sick and funny. This comment actually made me laugh harder than any of the comics. Thanks.
