Val: Mom's leaving for Haiti in two weeks.
Joan: TWO WEEKS?
Val: She's obviously been thinking about it for a while. Why wouldn't she tell us sooner?!
Joan: She knew we'd try to talk her out of it.
Val: Of course!!
Evie has always struck me as an old hippie who had to grow up because of her daughters. I think she is trying to get back to where she was in the 1960’s. If she has a theme song, it would be “She is Always Seventeen” by Harry Chapin.
The selfless answer would be that Evie wanted to do something giving for people who truly need it and deserve a Christmas gift. The sly answer would be that Evie wants to give Arnold a surprise gift.

The babies are drawn as such happy sweeties in the autumn weather today. I love the way she smiles around the plug in her face.

Does Evie go to Haiti before Christmas each year? For those who have read this strip long before me.

She can’t wait until after Christmas? What’s the hurry?
