For a second I thought this was the becginning of the arc where Calin takes to friendly skies with his balloon

Failure To Launch

Calvin didn’t jump correctly and hold the rope on take off. Hobbes looks so positive.

Calvin is grounded again!

Calvin really is a down-to-earth kid!

When you reach the top of the ladder, the only place to go is down!

Children around the world share the dream of being flown by a balloon and the pain of watching his or her balloon fly away.

Hobbes in the last panel looks sooo cute, just like my cat when she’s looking up.

There is always a catch.

Never listen to anyone who says, “try jumping”.

I only hurts when I say Ouch.

it’s not the fall that hurts. it ’s the sudden stop. I so love when Hobbes gets Calvin to do these things.

Calvin .. Are you o.kay ?

Even at age 6, I knew Calvin was being stupid this way. And later, when he had his imaginary balloon adventure, he didn’t exactly enjoy it.

Enjoy it while you can, Calvin; we’re running out of helium!

It would be nice if readers avoided the political spin on these comics, I’m sure that is not what Watterson had in mind.

Imagine yourself as the balloon, Calvin. BE the balloon.

I’d suggest that Calvin needs to be more aware of the Law of Gravity and the difficulty of ignoring it—but then he did manage to ignore it once or twice. . . .

Somebody almost died from that
