Child rearing and child care aren’t work? FYI–Some of the most tedious, but significant work done in our place and time doesn’t pay money. Housework, for instance, is real work done more often than not by women, but for NO PAY.

I LOVE the insight and realism implied in this comic. Well done, Mr. Rall!

More and more women are also, in addition to housework are working in almost all the jobs men do including going to war which is usually started by stupid old men over stupid reasons. I worked in several jobs with more education and qualifications then the men who made more money than I did. Because “they had families to support” - well so did I.

My, my, scott certainly is in fine form today. More power to you, Ted; I’ve seen this myself as my mother continually was promoted to be the highest-ranking woman in her company – but had to perform at a higher level than the equivalently promoted men around to get there. Fortunately, that wasn’t difficult, for her. AND she raised five kids to go to top schools and be successful men and women themselves. What scotty also conveniently overlooks is that even women working full time – and EQUAL time to the men – still do more of the housework and child care. Evidently he also thinks raising a child isn’t as important as being a gun-totin’, rootin’-tootin’ travelin’ wild man with no constraints put on him by those doggone women and children. I’m a feminist and proud of it – and scott merely shows off his own fear of women by trying to demonize us as “feminized.” He doesn’t know what a real man is. Or a real woman.

Scott is like a Christian version of Osama Bin Ladin…

He hates women He hates sports and other distractions from religion He hates businesses He hates dissenters from his point of view He hates anything not resembling a time in the past that he thinks was perfect. He thinks the world’s out to get him(well Osama knows the world’s out to get him, but scott thinks it).

And FYI, the solution is Viagra and a flying leap out of the closet, not Xanax.

It’s funny that you mention anecdotal evidence, scott, as it’s not really acceptable as a form of proof. After all, I’ve worked with plenty of woman too. Generally, they’ve been competent, hard working, and intelligent. And I’ve worked in a lot of different places.

And see, I’ve worked with men who sound just like you. You know what? They mostly sucked.

Anecdotes! It’s your little story against mine.

Ok, we found the source of scott’s neurosis; his job.

Scotty, why don’t you just get another job. That would be the move of someone with b@lls; daring to confront his boss and finding something else instead of taking it all.

I agree that sometimes men are badly treated. The image of men in the medias is that of a childish, dumb, selfish idiot à la Homer Simpson facing nearly perfect women à la Marge (a vestige of the infant’s idealized image of his mother, if you ask me, not feminism). It shouldn’t be that way, men are not like that and women are not like that either.

Men should also have more right reguarding their children (another vestige of the idealized image we had of our mothers when we were infants).

My favorite bit of greek philosophy is the book five of Plato’s The Republic. The philosophers say that since we don’t have different jobs (guarding cattle) for female and male dogs, why should men and women have different functions when it comes to jobs?

Look at the animal kingdom; female bobcat has kittens, she doesn’t wait for a man to bring her and her kittens food, she gets it herself and teaches her young how to hunt in the process.

Sooky Rottweiler says; That guy Plato was smart! I don’t get why you humans make such a fuss over what you call gender roles. My parents were both guarding cattle on a dairy farm when I was a pup. We were a freakin’ family of NINE! Not one baby at a time like you guys, and yet my mom guarded the cows with dad and grandma and uncle Marbles.

I lost a number of jobs and promotions to “affirmative action” hires of women and minorities. Most were incompetent idiots. I do not support “affirmative action” but totally support EQUAL OPPORTUNITY- for ALL folks. That is where both “liberal” and “conservatives” have messed up by kissing tail on those they wanted support from.

If affirmative action isn’t a right-wing concept as well to appoint incompetent females- two words- Sarah Palin.

And BTW Scooter, it should be noted that women outnumber men in the U.S., and if popular vote determined your fate, you’d REALLY be in trouble!

Men can expect women not to exist, if it’s not at a time convenient to said men. I have on occasion pondered the purpose of burqas, and the similar “clothing” that goes by other names. I think it’s to make women invisible. You see a blur of black or blue (hm), and the women behind the blur are invisible and essentially don’t exist.

I think you all misunderstood Ted’s message today. To me, he’s not excoriating the “patriarchy”. He’s pointing out that, with so many women graduating college, less of the males would find jobs than in the past. That is why there is a Layoff notice on the floor next to the sleeping”workaholic oppressor” There aint enough jobs to go around when all the women are holding outside jobs. whereas our economy was always predicated on the “nuclear” family, which is a thing rapidly vanishing.

church, I’ve been reading these thinking I’d stay out of it, but I read your comment and must disagree at least in part.

scott came in both guns ablazing with an extremely long post – no one had mentioned him up to that point. It was an abusive post – or if you will, vitriolic. This was full blown attack, not defensive.

The next post addressed some of his issues. In fact, several of them did.

If you’re telling me that you’re happy with what scott is saying, I’ll be very disappointed because I’ve considered most of your posts intelligent and well reasoned even if I don’t often agree with them. If you’re telling me that the just plain bizarre and abusive posts from scott should simply stand, I think most here will disagree.

It is not merely the liberals (as you insinuate) complaining about scott, you are plain wrong. Others on the right have asked him to cool it, too.

We all get worked up in the discussion/arguments, but with a few exceptions (steve, remember him?), go off the deep end. But on the whole, I’d say people here have answered his arguments repeatedly.

I said this about Scott before and I’ll probably say it again: He laughs a lot.

Scott reminds me a lot of one of my uncles, as they said about Mr. Bojanges – He Drinks A Bit. When he was drunk he would say nasty, mean things that would get people very upset. When I asked my Dad why his brother said such terrible things, my Dad explained, “He likes to get people pissed off, it makes him laugh.”

Ted Rall: Insert effusive and toady comment here

And to think I spent the day out in some of the last sunshine we’ll see this year with the people I love.

I feel like I really missed out on staring at a screen on my day off watching people I don’t know tell me how much their life sucks. My God like Spinoza’s, lives in nature.

This might have been said but I started scrolling very early, I’ll say it anyway. The explanation I’ve heard about the 80% figure isn’t because salaries. Its at 80% over the course of a career because of the pressure from religion and society to stop working to raise kids. Men will never have this pressure, and since I treat women as humans not things to be coveted (THATS what you do when you call another man’s wife the sun or sunshine or whatever gross thing you did) I think its arbitrary and illogical. Don’t spout dogmatic BS about Mary raised Jesus or women give birth they should just stay home, just like pay differential, there is also no evidence that says mothers raise better kids. so don’t bother. Dogma of your religion is ANECDOTAL go ahead get “church”-y

The 80% factors in the lost wages of quitting the job but also the momentum lost in the career. when a woman re enters a career, her former peers are now three four seven years her senior with all the intrinsic promotions and raises.

It doesn’t measure direct pay differentials This is the potential shade scott started in when he said there’s no evidence of pay differential, but he isn’t looking in the right place. And spent saturday raising his BP

    As a bonus layer

Rall has implied (at least I infer) that not only is he on the couch, but she is about to start supper and get the kids from football practice and ready for Wednesday night catechism class.

    Flame on?

I do agree with Scott on some points. The backlash of a few generational attempts to stifle man’s oppression over them has resulted to some degree in the over-victimization of women. And coupled with a materialistic culture, the final result is having quite great a number of women spoiled, materialistic, and also somewhat confused as to what their role/purpose in life should be, and from a more general perspective, less inclined to invest their talents in intellectual pursuits, degrading their influence in society overall.

Ah, but I love them still. First and foremost Megan Fox. If I don’t get to marry her, I’ll buy a used RealDoll (not as expensive) as there’s still less risk of STD’s, high-maintenance, P.M.S., infidelity, divorce, alimony, and a mother-in-law.

I have other stuff to do, so I skimmed a lot of it. But I need to jump in with one point. Scott, you are calling for facts and trying to be logical, and yet you are citing a mythology as fact. If you want to be all factual then stop believing in a fairy tale. Quite simply, there is no evidence that Jesus is lord, or any such thing. The Bible is just a bunch of stuff that people wrote and edited, or can you factually prove differently? No, you can’t (obviously without citing the Bible), cause it can’t be done - the Bible is made up, so shut up and go worship your made up god leaving sane people here to discuss things.

that’s been my thinking too palestino. he seems pretty bitter. bitterness can truly make us sick. especially if we continue to feed it by speaking the venom over and over. bitterness becomes hate and so on. forgiving is part of a healing process for sure, and thinking on healthy issues can improve health. that’s medically true, and actually biblical - a pauline admonishment to the philippians:

“… whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”

the secular version (although clearly derived i believe) is Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s “Power of Positive Thinking”. not just thinking pretty things - it’s a good read.

my guess is that scott is pretty sick.

having survived two pretty cruel marriages i could hate men forever, but that just never happened. men can be cruel. women can be cruel. - even though 30 years later i still have to carefully choose to forgive the abuse in my heart. i still love men. they are not all alike.

and scott, women are not all alike.

rall’s toon, again is masterful. having been across a world of great experiences, i can tell you he’s right on.

before grad school, my jobs were primarily secretarial, and you can bet that could majorly suck. my bosses, all men, almost all - not all - were on the make like it was part of their job description. and this is true, i got fired because - stupid me, i went on a date with him - i wouldn’t - uh - discover the bedroom with him.

after grad school, i found that in academe, not only were men paid more than women, but certain disciplines were paid more than others! fortunately i was recruited by a university whose faculty were unionized. all disciplines, all genders, equal pay.

but that’s an exception to a hugely disparate employment structure across the nation, and ted seems to be pointing out a bizarre backlash of the femme-lib movement. it’s almost like he drew the toon for - mm - somebody.

anyway, i’m sort of hoping that scott reads this so i can tell him: i’m sorry your experience has been so horrible. hate, i think, is emotional. love, on the other hand, can be emotional or intellectual - chosen. i love you dude and pray for your healing.

charlie, -I like the 555 thing as Nietzsche said, “It was clever of God to learn Greek when he wished to be a writer, and cleverer still to not have learned it better.” Declaring Jesus is not God was a rhetorical statement on my part. I know that everything is god. And I’m not against dogmas, just stupid ones, such a literally believing in a book that often casts god as a raving murderous thug. Why don’t you bible types get us a Jubilee year? A little overdue, aren’t we? then you might be worth something.

I can’t believe this thread is so long. Wow!

In a way, what I had in mind isn’t that important. After all, art assumes its own meanings once it’s in the public sphere. Without the cartoonist to explain his cartoon, readers bring their own experiences and biases to bear to it, and that becomes the real meaning.

I was ruefully commenting on the fact that, while women seem to have made much progress in the workplace and in educational aspiration, much of that progress seems to have resulted more from men backsliding. This is especially true due to the fact that men have suffered disproportionately from layoffs in the current Depression, prompting many feminists to wonder whether they’ve been conned.

True gender equality will come when economic equality is achieved among classes. People should be free to pursue their interests, not just compete in the labor market.
