In a copy of the law obtained by Reuters, Article 132 states “a wife is obliged to fulfill the sexual desires of her husband.”

It also states that a husband should spend one night in every four with his wife, have sexual contact with her at least once every four months and that a woman has to wear make-up if her husband demanded it.

They passed a law in Afghanistan that essentially says a wife cannot refuse her husband. Even if sick. Karzai is finally re-examining it because of the international outrage (see? diplomacy has some useful impact), but it’s still likely to be softened rather than slammed. But I think this cartoon is off-key at best.

BTW - Who wrote that law in the first place - any Islamic scholar knows that makeup is not allowed by any Haddith (Islamic ruling based on the Koran or tradition) that I’ve ever read. I guess this gives weight to the idea that the Afghani leadership does not seem all that far removed from the stone age!

It is obvious that Oliphant is using absurdity twice over - illustrating the tough time recognition of human rights is going to have in this patriarchical society when it goes against their long held and cherished beliefs. Anywhere else in the non-muslim and enlightened world, the government would be concerned with the human rights of the wives. Does Afghanistan culture practice the barbaric female “circumcision” rite? I think not…but I do not know…
