If people weren’t as susceptible to guilt, and others weren’t so perceiving of it, we’d have a lot more shoplifting, more stealing from libraries, etc. The criminal’s body will most certainly betray him. That feeling of getting caught is such a horrible one. The feel of your insides turning dark, and your face reddening. My superiors can always tell when something is wrong.

Welcome to the Internet, where men are women, women are men, and children are the FBI. (This isn’t the case)

Not doing a very good job of hiding your guilt, Calvin. Mom’s going to look out the window any minute now. You’re in BIG TROUBLE!

When I was Calvin’s age I just couldn’t handle the guilt and imagined the worst punishment ever. I’d end up coming in sobbing and confessing all to my parents.

This is a real laugh-out-louder. I love the expression on Calvin’s face in the last panel. He can have all the clean clothes and sandwiches he wants, but when Mom sees where her car is she will hunt him down. Neither Spaceman Spiff nor the transmogrifier can save him this time! Bye Calvin. :(

Mike Firesmith, What ChuckTrent64 said describes Calvin to a tee. If he’d play it cool, he might escape unscathed. Calvin’s paranoid because he’s (probably) unnecessarily afraid of being caught and found guilty.

deepfrieddrippingrag said (yesterday), “Calvin’s mind is streaked with optimism, and a somewhat glittery hollowness.” There has been a change of mind since ‘yesterday’. Now Calvin’s mind is streaked with pessimism (and terror), and the ‘glittery hollowness’ has become claustrophobic, morbid, dark, dismal, dread. BTW, ‘glittery hollowness’ is a brilliant sort of oxymoronish term.

“Do I have any clean clothes?” … “a few dozen sandwiches” … “No need to get up or look, for example, out the window! Just stay where you are for another 10 minutes” …

With a son like Calvin (paired with the fact that he had already been way too quiet for way too long) what have had me immediately looking out every window to see what he didn’t want me to know about!!!!!

Way to stay calm and cool there, Calvin!

Unlike some of his other escapades, at least he realizes that there’s no point in even trying to talk, lie, fantasize or rationalize his way out of this one.

What a great combination of art and dialogue. The fear just drips from Calvin’s facial expressions and words. It leaps off the page - er, screen. And since it isn’t happening to any of us, it’s hilarious!

I’m reminded of other great comedians, such as Lucille Ball and Jackie Gleason, who’ve entertained us with the schtick of utter terror when their plans go awry. I can just picture Calvin being questioned by his mother and responding with nothing more than Gleason’s patented ‘Homina, homina, homina … .”

Hobbes, Calvin’s lawyer, has advised Calvin to enter his initial briefs before the court of Mom early in order to create the best possible impression on the judge. Like any good politician, Calvin is appearing to admit guilt while not really acceding to it in the first place. This strip is certainly a Rorschack (sic) for the adult mind, isn’t it?

@Johanan: Does it vary by M-B type, you think? Because I am hardcore INTJ &, though I never did anything that bad as a kid, I’ve never had any trouble playing innocent. If I had intended to run away, as Calvin does, I’d never have broadcast it to my mom; I would have been silent & acted normal & said/done nothing to arouse suspicion. Calvin seems scared stupid in today’s strip.

@Rowena28, I think, in general, Es have more difficulty hiding their feelings, especially EFs, while Is have the easiest time. I remember one INFP whose boss was an ENFJ. She drove her crazy, because the boss could never hide anything from the INFP, while the boss could never figure out what was going on in the INFP’s mind.

On the other hand, kids of any stripe have trouble hiding their feelings, especially when they are as guilty as Calvin here. They know they are in big trouble, and can’t see any way out.
