You shoulda made him coiled, Lio. Follow the instructions.

If he made it coiled it would have been a python and the whole class would be in danger. Of course, making a Golem doesn’t do much for classroom safety. perhaps Lio should have told them the story that goes with the creature.

True genius is never recognized; Lio is “a prophet without honor in his own art class.”

A coiled pot is what is on the rest of the class’s desks. You make ropes of clay, and coil them into the shape of a pot, then you smooth them out, and then they are fired.

Whatever he started, his creativity took him to make the creature he formed. He got in trouble for not following instructions. A lot of teachers don’t understand child proteges. He will grow up to be the next Stephen King.

Reminds me of my Grade 1, when I colored a drawing of a chick to look like a quail. Got an F for that one.

This shows the ignorance of most “art” teachers. If art is just about following directions, there would be no great masterpieces in the world.

BTW, according to Sam’s Strip (why oh why won’t they bring it back), nobody uses dunce caps in real life because if you give it to one kid, they’ll all want one.

Only in Lio’s world, would a sculpture as good as Lio’s rate a dunce cap! Unfortunately, in the real world, school is more about following directions than about creativity and learning how to think.

Hey, hold on now! The assignment was to make a coil pot. I agree, the dunce cap is harsh but he didnt finish the assignment. If I assign a report on George Washington and a student writes one on Led Zeppelin should I still accept it? Even if he writes it in iambic pentameter it still isnt what I asked for. There are alot of great art teachers out there who would praise Lio’s work and creativity, but still have to give him a poor grade for the assignment. Sorry Dude.

I’ve seen how students treat our art teacher when she has them work with clay. They roll up little balls of the stuff and throw it at each other, and her. I know she wishes for someone like Lio who at least enjoys being creative. And yet she comes back day after day, year after year, trying to share a love of art. It’s a cute comic, but I wouldnt bust so hard on his teacher.

Hey, I had my own dunce cap with my name on it and the stool fit my tushy just right. It may have all been metaphorical (except for my seat in the principal’s office) but it was mine nonetheless.

Well, Lio got HALF the assignment right…”Fun with Pottery!” Perhaps he didn’t get past that point, or he understood “Let’s make a coil pot!” to be a suggestion for the less creative rather than a directive.

Well that’s probably a given. As long as there are dunces, there will be dunce caps.

I find that throughout history, if no one questioned authority, we would still be in the dark ages, possibly without yet discovering America.
