So Mutt is either an idiot or a liar.

I was almost four in 1948, so I was probably having a good time.

Mutt’s memory is conveniently spotty.

Jeff MUST have accidentally hit the switch on the hat from “memory” mode to “forget” mode while passing the hat to Mutt.

Jeff loaned him the money in 1948. Mutt forgot because it was a long time ago.

(yes, I know the age of the strip.)
