The grade school education I received 70 years ago was equal or better than the High School education of today. My high school education exceeded the undergraduate degree of today. This is probably not just in the U.S. as I’ve found that Australian young people of today do not use nor comprehend cursive writing. My understanding of the U.S. constitution as a result of my grade school education exceeds that of half of the Supreme Court justices of today.
I enjoyed my career, teaching and interacting with the utes does keep you young(er). However, I am that content that my 30+ year career has concluded. It really is a profession for the young (some exceptions apply). One thing you do have to have in your skill set is an ability to get over disappointment-no matter from what source. It will happen. Often there’s nothing you can do about it. And, almost always, it will be fine.
Mom could have written this. She taught, and her parents were a disappointment. Thing is, they thought she was the disappointment. Her paternal parent opined that she should have been born male, since she was the firstborn. Yes, he was a jerk.

My Grade 4 teacher showed up at my office about 15 years after leaving her class. She just wanted to check up on her “favourite student.”

In high school, had a girl in history class (No strike that – I wish); I meant there was a girl in my history class whose sister was the teacher..

My MIL was a teacher and argued that they should be underpaid. That way only truly dedicated people would want to be teachers. Weird logic.
