Iowa and New Hampshire, two of the most unrepresentative states that could be picked, somehow set the tone. This primary system we have now actually continues to produce worse and worse candidates; we got better ones when the “party bosses” hashed it out in a “smoke-filled room.” And while I don’t advocate going back to that, we need to find a way to pick our candidates that doesn’t involve the kind of manipulation we see. It would start, of course, with a lot more than just super-partisans paying attention.
I believe all primaries should be held on the same day. I HATE that one state’s results influence or even nullify the potential votes of other states. Especially when the first states to have primaries are so small and unrepresentative. Why should they have such outsized influence?
Meanwhile Gov. John Sununu of New Hampshire says he would still vote for Perp45 even if he’s convicted of one of the 91 criminal charges he’s been indicted for. Such slavish devotion is hardly surprising to read anymore.
I went to college in NH. In a government class, the professor was covering the revolutionary war. She put up a chart. Years of the revolutionary war across the top, the 13 colonies down the Y axis.
In each cell was the percent that the colony paid of the continental congress’ levy toward the war effort.
She didn’t actually have to say it; it was starkly clear from the chart. Colonies only paid their bit for the war effort when the war was on their soil. When the war moved away, they stopped paying.
But she did actually say it. And she finished with “You’ll notice NH and GA never paid a dime. But to GA’s credit, they don’t put ‘Live Free Or Die’ on their license plates.”
Some waggish student at the back shouted out “Oh, they’re living for free all right!”
The only GOP candidate worthy of mention dropped out yesterday. Chris Christie has a shred of decency. The three remaining are either terrifying or nauseating- two are both.
Am I the only one that really doesn’t pay attention to the Iowa primary votes, and really wish candidates wouldn’t either. Seriously, dropping out, because of the vote in Iowa? How dumb is that?

Taxpayers should not be funding primary elections. The parties should.

From this side of the fence we really are confused about caucuses. If ever there was a way to pad the results surely caucuses are it.

Voting for all Democrats, up and down the ballot. Don’t care about any debates or primary.

Our electoral problems were weaponized when nine judges decided corporations have human rights and that money is speech.
