It looks to me like Bossman has tried to get someone to do the job vacated by Roberts, but without success. There’s too much work and not enough pay. So Bossman is forced to offer it to Brutus. It may be that the offer is a good sign of Bossman’s confidence in Brutus, but can Brutus handle more work even with a larger office?
When I worked at the grocery store in the late 60’s and early 70’s the store wanted to promote me to head clerk for 10 cents an hour more and work 3pm to midnight at that time most of my shift was 8-5 I did not take the promotion then they wanted to fire me!
Brutus, you are wise to ask how much money will be involved, compensation for travel, etc… before you express more interest. Don’t forget to talk it over with Gladys, too.
Remember, Brutus, the boss means what he says when it comes to money. One more pro: more travel means more time away from your mother-in-law. One more con: you’re going to be working closer to the boss. Sounds like going from the frying pan into the fire.
A very pertinent question that any advanced manager needs to ask if he is to be thorough in inquiring about his potential new position. The Chief, especially, knows that and would be very surprized had that question not been asked. Knowing the Chief, it won’t be a quantum leap in salary, but I’m sure that it will be significant. One Caveat though. When you tell your wife and Mother-In-Law about the “promotion”, which you must and will no doubt, DO NOTsay a raise is involved or that money will be spent before you ever earn it. Just keep the new monies in a separate account or in a shoe box in the closet for those rainy day showers that will happen in the future. Born Loser or not, I’m sure that you will do good…..
I was once told I was promoted, lots more responsibility but no more money. I turned it down, they told me that wasn’t an option. I just never did the work.
my wife and her co-workers have to pick up the slack after yet another new recruit quit after only a couple months. from the way my wife described it, he was mainly in the way anyway, so they’re getting more done with him gone, but the store my wife works for is old-style and refuses to consider offering contracts with flexible hours that would accommodate workers’ needs, too…

So basically, the chief wants to promote him to a higher position with more responsibility, but no more money. That sounds real familiar.

You didn’t tell HIM not to mention that. Got to be more specific with those instructions there, Rancid.

Does it come with a new boss? Sigh… I didn’t think so.

It’ll likely result in a pay cut.

I guess that proves Brutus wasn’t ready for the job after all.

Was Roberts the name of the guy that Brutus was always chatting with around the water cooler?
Shame he retired and we will never see him again!

I sense a 100% raise in work responsibilities and a 1% raise in salary.

Enough so you’re in a higher tax bracket, so the government can steal more of your money you earned and you keep less. Cue ‘Taxman’ by The Beatles.

Why do you suppose this Rancid fellow reminds me of Milburn Drysdale? ㋡

The travel part sounds intriguing, any time away from Rancid is worth it.

Veeblefester was all smiles, but Brutus you just had to go and spoil his mood by asking him about more money.
