I gave up putting them up years ago. It was too much trouble taking them back Down again.
I did see someone a few years back who had solved that problem: They had a Flagpole in their yard and, for Christmas, they attacked one end of the light strings to a large Hoop, fastened all the other ends together and just hauled the whole mess up the Flagpole so that it looked like a Christmas tree made of LED lights.
So long as they were careful not to tangle the strings while storing it away, just haul it up again the next year.
