The “Put Christ back in Christmas” crowd needs to remember that Advent was spent in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Not in mortal combat on black Friday.
Every year, Christmas merchandising comes earlier and earlier. I’m tired of the whole thing before December ever comes. If the only reason for observing Christmas is getting more stuff, then the point has been missed.
Last year, I temped in an office where they had a radio station playing nothing but Christmas music, for the entire month of November. Let me tell you, when you have heard Holly, Jolly Christmas six times a day, by six different singers, most of whom refuse to sing it the way it was written, it tends to lose its charm.
I wish people would just celebrate one holiday at a time, giving each holiday its time in the sun. Where’s the “excitement” if Christmas stuff has been out since Aug? Halloween gets all of Oct, Thanksgiving gets Nov, and Christmas can officially start the weekend after Thanksgiving. My coworkers already have Christmas decorations up. Too soon!
I love the holiday season, including Christmas. However, I don’t want to see any Santa Clauses, Christmas trees, or hear any Christmas songs until the day after Thanksgiving.
I read an article that helped explain why Christmas stuff shows up so early. Some of it truly is the stores trying to get early purchases (and they do), but some of it is also the companies which manufacturer the items. Most stores charge companies to display their items, and since there’s limited floor space, the earlier the display arrives, that means other manufacturers can’t occupy that space.
Denmark totally ignores the US Thanksgiving, so this cartoon is irrelevant to my friends there. But their retailers went whole hog for Black Friday. In fact, more than whole. Even before the pandemic, many had extended it to “Black Friday Week”, but I’m told that now at least one retailer is advertising “Black Friday Month”.

I just call it HallowThanksMas any more. The guy in the red suit has eaten all the other holidays.
And the stores/ads have completely run Christ out of Christmas.

Put Thanksgiving back ahead of Christmas. As, it is on the calendar.
They keep pushing this early Christmas stuff, people are going to get burned out and start ignoring it altogether.
