Because of all the fossil fuels we’ve burned, there will come a time when the heat index will be high enough and last long enough to cause a massive loss of life for tens or even hundreds of thousands of people. All it takes is a wet bulb temperature of 35 °C (95 °F), which is the threshold beyond which the body is no longer able to adequately cool itself.
I think the real problem is probably overpopulation and use of fossil fuel is just a correlated variable. Given government’s abysmal track record at fixing things, it is laughable to think they can successfully deal with such a complex problem. Those dreaded unintended consequience tend to pop up often making the cure worse than the condition (predominently fatherless innercity welfare homes).
There are always entrenched interests fighting against technologic innovations. The era of petroleum for transportation and energy production, though, should be concluding and replaced with greener less disruptive technologies.
Typical of the Billionaire class. They want to enjoy all their material wealth today, as much as they can get, regardless of cost to the health of our planet. To H%** with the rest of us, and all other species, even their own children!
Most oil execs deny that any of those things exist. The ones that do understand that they’re changing the climate deny that it will ever affect them or their children — they have an unshakeable faith that their money will protect them from any effects of their crimes. Let the poor people drown, burn, etc., we’re all right.
Those who don’t vote with their wallet, refusing to finance the worst corporate offenders, have no right to complain.
It’s been half a century since the oil embargoes of the 70s made clear a few of the perils of a car-centric society. Yet we learned nothing and doubled down on complete obsequience to the car cult. Yes, Big Oil is evil, but the vast majority of Americans have absolutely no interest in taking any steps to wean themselves away from their pathetic and utter dependency on automobiles.
Q: Oh, but what about all the jobs? A: If millions of jobs help create short term prosperity as well as rapidly increasing harm to life on the planet, don’t you think it’s time to stop producing the wrong type of energy?

Before human beings started burning stuff, the Earth’s climate was both stable and ideal: Never too hot. Never too cold. Always just right.

I think there’s an extra “Y” in that statement. And that “someday” is today.
