A reference to the fact that today 11-11 is Armistice Day. I had an auntie Elsie who was born on 11.11.16 so she had her second birthday on the day that the Armistice was signed. Auntie Elsie would be fifty when I was born in December 1966. She died in November 2011 just a few days after her ninety-fifth birthday.

I was born in California on 11.11.1942. And I’m really beginning to feel it.

As this comic takes place in the 50’s it seems that Dad was in WWII or Korea and Red is acknowledging that. Nice!

Newton has accompanied me to several ceremonies honoring our veterans on Memorial (Remembrance) Day and Veterans (Armistice) Day. The days may have different names, but the sentiment is the same.

This reminds me of the first time I called a Sergeant “Sir” after basic.

Oh my gosh. This one took my breath away. The way Red is positioned, looking into the strip so he’s seeing Dad from the same angle as us…wow.

Happy Birthday. I hope that you enjoy your day. My late father was born in 1942 as well on June 20th, the same day as Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys and 2 days after Sir Paul McCartney. Don’t worry too much about the aches and pains of age. They come to us all. Just remember, on this day especially the young heroes that fought and died for our freedom. Heroes, true blue heroes everyone of them. So embrace your age, as old age is a privilege denied to too many. And don’t think of 81 as being old; just think of it as 81 trips you’ve made around the sun.♥☺

    …In Flanders Fields…byJohn McCrea…

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky.

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago.

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

“ Oh those that were living just tried to survive

In that mad world of blood, death and fire

And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive

While around me the corpses piled higher

Then a big Turkish shell knocked me a$#e over head

And when I awoke in me hospital bed

And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead

I never knew there was worse things than dying ”

WWI—not only useless, but sowed the seed of WWII
