Social media is a terrifying social experiment we have been running on our most vulnerable population for a decade now. I’m not excited to see the results.
I recently read Hearts in Atlantis. While I wasn’t around then myself, I’ve spoken with several who were and who’ve read the book and they said it gives a reasonably good sense of the emotion of the 60s. At least, as much as a single book can. That was, after all, Stephen King’s intention according to the foreword. The titular story in particular tells of a college freshman discovering life and love on campus while the Vietnam war rages in the background – and his (and everyone’s) knowledge that the stakes for them to succeed at school are immense. I was fascinated reading about the ‘sparrow track’, and the way all the stories tie together is pretty inventive and satisfying. Highly recommend.
How sweet!!
