Grade: A-: I won’t judge by first look

Okay, kind of an out-of-nowhere way to introduce an arc’s storyline, considering no characters mentioned AI before.

Mr Peirce, are you at all reading these comments? WE WANT DAPHNE!!!!! We don’t care about any other ideas at the moment – Nate’s detentions, Wordle, A.I., etc. Why did you introduce Daphne in the first place – with a month’s worth of the most exciting and suspenseful build-up your strip has ever seen – why did you endear her to readers so carefully and lovingly – only to subsequently pretend that she doesn’t exist??

This subject matter seems to be a year old. Knowing Nate, he should have been among the first to harness innovative technology to be lazy, the very day ChatGPT came out last year

Well I mean, can’t say I’m surprised about the topic of this strip.

my high school runs originality checks on all online writing forms, mostly a Google Doc or so, just so no one uses AI to type for them, well no one YET, but who knows?

I just knew that an arc like this was gonna come sooner or later. Nate exploiting artificial intelligence to do his homework.

Strip rating: 3/10 Sorry, I just found this one to be too predictable to make for a good strip.

I thought AI would be used to give accurate answers to real questions, but wouldn’t be good at colloquial English. It turns out that it’s very GOOD at colloquial English, but it’s all vague BS, and often completely false. What good is that?

I like Daphne and Nate, but I think we can all agree that it wouldn’t be fun if they were always there. If you look past, there was only a few strips with Angie, Kelly, and Trudy before breakup.

I find it sickening that all people want to see from this comic is just more of Daphne and have no tolerance for literally any other ideas. Sad, too, because this is one of the more interesting topics to have a week about. Just enjoy the comic, people.

I hear teachers are using AI now to catch students using AI to cheat using AI, so teachers can use AI…….

If Nate really does lose his edge, he could use AI to come up with really creative ways to get detention.

I get people are frustrated about a lack of Daphne. But remember this: Not every week has to have her in it. Maybe she could be in this week and get Nate to stop the foolish AI stuff. But if she was there every single week, whether you like her character or not, that may get repetitive after a while. I think some good story ideas can be done with her and Nate in the future. But not every week needs to have her in it. And not every week needs a “story arc.” Comic strips mainly tell jokes. And it’s not the first time Pierce has made commentary on current trends in our world. But these artists plan these stories out in advance. I’m sure that Lincoln is reading these comments. He may not respond to them like he used to, but I’m sure he still reads them on occasion. The bottom line is… just calm down. Take a breath.

As one who is meant to major in computer science, software development, and AI, I’m desperately hoping that Pierce handles this arc well. AI, while it’s the future, it’s not as good as a lot of people think it is. Jobs are at risk for almost every person. Heck, PIERCE’S job is at risk.

thats interesting. using AI on exams and essays is a serious issue. wondering if nate pushes his luck a little too far this time and there are serious consquences

Great. Another arc trying to be modern. I don’t know why, but these kinds of arcs are really getting on my nerves. Maybe it’s because A.I. and Wordle and stuff like that just feels super out of place in the Big Nate world? I don’t know, I just don’t like it.3/10

I actually think this A.I arc would work really well with Nate’s character. Reminder, Nate’s always been a character who dosent like doing work so it’s only natural for him to want to use somethingTo do the work for him. I see a lot of people saying that they want more daphne. And while I agree that pierce should use her more, I think this is a great chance to develop Nate’s character.

Disappointed Daphne is not featured (yet again). But maybe she will be the one who talks Nate out of using AI!

In more positive news (for those wanting to see more of Daphne, at least), Ember will be posting two Daphne one-shots soon, including one from Daphne’s perspective. I’ve read what she’s written so far- and they’re both great, especially for the one being her first first person fanfic she’s written! (I mean, of course they would be great. Because (1) hello, it’s Ember, and (2) she stole some of the ideas from me. So put those two things together and amazing things happen lol :3)

Sneak peak of one: listen to “According to You” by Orianthi. Will sum up the fanfic pretty nicely imo

(part 1) Most of the comments have become so divided here lately, I feel the need to play referee.

Some of you are saying the ones wishing for Daphne to appear are doing it so aggressively and excessively. Some are saying it’s pointless to try and convinced the creator (Peirce) to change his comic to appease it’s audience, especially since these arcs are written in advance. To just chill and enjoy/accept what he produces.

The other side is expressing how frustrating it is to them that the main character’s girlfriend is hardly seen/featured since she’s returned from camp. That there should be more arcs with her in them- and how frustrating/puzzling it is that this isn’t happening. That they can’t even fully enjoy the strip because it only seems logical that she would get featured and that it feels Peirce has used the Daphne arc as clickbait just to draw straying readers back in. That it feels likes a breakup arc is around the corner- and how could that happen when there’s barely anything to break up?

I want to say I genuinely get both sides. I see the frustration on both ends- one side frustrated with the creator and the other frustrated with fellow readers.

I can’t/won’t speak fully for either side, but I will say this: I’ve personally enjoyed some of the arcs without Daphne. Some have been great without her- because they didn’t need her in them. A Daphne cameo would’ve been cute at times, but I see the wisdom of Peirce not doing that; it would’ve distracted from the overall arc/it’s focus. That’s said, some arcs could’ve easily placed her in them without distracting from the overall theme of the arc and would’ve been a great way to segue her into the arc.

Stop hating!!!!!!! Every strip i read has at least one hate comment directed at Licoln Pierce
