While I was for encouraging him on his little projects, I can see this isn’t gonna work out. Even if he can put it together, a 3" deep bookshelf isn’t gonna hold many books. And he’s got to wonder at some point if the pain is worth it.
Husband was shocked that I use could hand tools – in his family only males did so.
Since he works in wood as one of the many crafts he works at – we have a woodshop in our garage, plus more tools for same and other media in our basement.

See, you hold the nail with a pair of pliers and then use the hammer. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’ll succeed in driving the nail.

Why is he trying to build it standing up? It’s much easier to build a bookcase with it lying flat on the floor first.
