What colleges charge for what they call an education isn’t fair, but Biden’s scheme isn’t fair to the taxpayers or the responsible borrowers who struggled to pay their loans. If anyone should give students money back it is the schools!
If you are stupid enough to buy and pack that backpack with useless courses and degrees, then yes, you get to carry it. Why should others around you who made good decisions be responsible for your folly?
If a family is smart enough to contract with a bank for help in financing educational opportunity that is guaranteed by We the People — then no, they won’t carry it alone.
The purpose of the U.S. backing bad loans to good people is to pay off the bank if things go wrong. Obviously things went wrong.
The purpose of education is to relieve ignorance. The purpose of abortion is to relieve one-half of humanity from involuntary servitude.
What we need is what other forward-thinking countries have — tuition-free university. Why should it cost anything? We have public education through high school, and a college education is important in an increasing number of careers. At the very least, we should make it as affordable as it was for their parents and grandparents.
Loan forgiveness is only a short term fix as it does nothing to address the problem of high tuition at public universities. In fact it may make it worse if states assume future loans will be forgiven and cut support/increase tuition telling students the fed will pick up the tab.
If the states had been subsidizing colleges at the level the did in the past, people wouldn’t have to be borrowing money (and the taxpayers would be paying for it).
Republican tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations = lower federal and state government income = cuts in state aid for schools and especially state colleges and universities = crushing student debt and poor schools = more ignorant generations of republicans =(repeat above)
I laugh An individual filed a complaint with social security that he was not getting his full social security payment, and was informed that his student loans and penalties were automatically being taken out of his payment, due to his lack of paying prior to his retirement; but what would you expect from a MD
The rich benefit from the caste system that keeps college out of the reach of all but those who are already well off. They can pay wages that require two or three jobs per household just to keep food on the table, while they keep the majority of the GNP produced by the people who are living that way. And, they are assured that future generations will remain in that situation, since tuition isn’t an option.
The average college graduate pays about $7800 more a year in federal taxes than the average high school graduate. Over 30 years, that totals about $234,000. If that’s divided by the 4 years it takes to get a college education, the government would break even if it paid every student $58,500 a year to attend school. This doesn’t even consider that with the degree, the person is less likely to ever need unemployment or welfare, that more students would complete high school if they could see a clear way to a really good job, and that they would be enriching the Social Security and Medicare funds. They would also be paying a larger amount in all other types of taxes. The best investment we could make to keep America strong is to not just forgive all student loans but to make all higher education, including trade schools, etc totally free, as long as the student is making decent grades, and increase the number of schools and teachers to make room for all who can profit from the education. There is no better way to spend money than to invest it in our people, to give them every opportunity to be the best they can be. Yes, It’s good for them individually, but the country is made up of individuals, so what’s good for one is good for the country.. We don’t, even during a time of high unemployment, have so much a lack of jobs as we have a lack of people who have the skills to perform the jobs that are available- in other words, a lack of education.
High schools should have a class on college education financing, with both the bankruptcy catch and a comparison of the total cost vs the current economic usefulness of a degree.
Sadly, some Colleges have their priorities on what they spend that tuition money on ALL screwed up. Several years ago, the University of Florida combined several diverse Computer tech courses into a single course to save some $2 million dollars. Then they turned around THE SAME YEAR and increased the athletic department’s budget by over $2.5 MILLION to make to football stadium look nicer.
Have you ever noticed that nobody ever complains about having to pay off their high school loans? That’s because, partway into the 20th Century, everyone in America realized that a “common school” education (where you “graduated” from 8th grade) wasn’t going to cut it in modern life, with its increasing complexities and possibilities. So, since education is a state responsibility (not a federal one), all 50 states made independent decisions to make a high-school education available for free to everyone who wanted one, for the good of society as a whole.
How this applies to colleges is left as an exercise for the student.
I worked every year I was in school and at least 1 year I worked virtually every day of the year (well over 345 by my count). I worked full time my last year. My tuition and books costs and housing costs and the cost of other necessities for those 4 years combined would not now cover a single semester’s tuition or even close to it. No other costs except medical debt have climbed anywhere near those numbers. Yeah, the cost of higher education is grossly bloated and the administration of far too many schools simply rip off their students and the parents of students.
BTW learn the difference between the phrases “non profit” and “not for profit” You will discover yet another great hypocrisy
The War on the Poor has also for a very long time been the War on the Middle Class but far too many Americans are far too dumb to know it
And also take away or make more expensive their health care. We must keep the 1% happy so wealth and opportunity trickles down, as it never has before. No, really. It never has before because it doesn’t work.
We’ve said it before: the QOP loves stupid voters. It follows that they want college to be as expensive and crushing financially as possible. The rich get breaks for their own.

Well, I say it’s about time we had a decent Supreme Court that got down to its business of taking away people’s rights.

Plumbers, electricians and auto mechanics come fully formed out of high school, don’t ’cha know?
The 3-5 year training [and the continuing course-work to stay current] they endure is free & just for show. No loans here — just ask Karen
How dare working class people try to better their minds! Mc Donalds & the car wash await you — and debt free too!
