It’s really hard to run against the incumbent, no matter what the party. Because you look like you care more about yourself than the person who has proven to be able to win once. That explains the Donkeycrat. As for the Qphelump, I think it’s basically that they’re afraid of his maga-block-heads.
I am one of the 51% (latest NBC poll) of Democrats who would prefer a 2024 Democratic nominee other than Joe Biden and, yes, age is a relevant factor.
In the large (20+) field of 2020 Democratic primary candidates, Biden was not even in my top five. But once he got the nomination, the choice was Biden or Trump. As Biden so often says, “Don’t judge me against the almighty; judge me against the alternative.” In that dichotomous choice, I whole-heartedly supported and voted for Biden.
Once Biden overwhelmingly won the actual vote of the people by a margin of MORE THAN SEVEN MILLION VOTES, and by the same Electoral College margin that Trump got (with fewer votes than his main rival) and which he called a “landslide,” I watched as Biden far exceeded my low expectations and, with the narrowest possible congressional margins (including a couple of nominally Democratic senators who were often the roadblocks for getting important legislation passed), accumulated an amazing record of successes in economic recovery, job creation, reducing unemployment, gun safety reform, passing the greatest infrastructure package since Eisenhower and the greatest environmental/climate package ever. Despite conservative hate-media ridicule, Biden has certainly set down a record worthy of reelection.
If I were to be asked if I approve of Biden’s job performance, I enthusiastically answer “yes.”
But yes, I remain one of the 51% of Democrats who would prefer a different 2024 Democratic nominee and, yes, age is a relevant factor in terms of how long Biden can continue to perform at this level in his 80’s and how opponents can exploit it for political advantage.
But if Biden is our nominee, as seems probable, I will again enthusiastically support him. And the same poll that said that 51% of Democrats (including me) would prefer a different candidate also said that 88% of those Democrats would stick with Biden if he is the nominee and, again, that includes me.
Biden and tRump remind me of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumber, but on most things Lloyd and Harry are smarter. Like most that I have heard from it is choosing who will do the least damage and not the best person for the job. So far it looks like a tribe of chimps’ vying for the balls in the bottom of the vase and all have their hands stuck
Both Biden and Trump are too old. Fluid intelligence begins to decline in our 20s, but takes a big dip by our 70s (the offset provided by crystalized intelligence (wisdom) maxes out in one’s 60s). This has nothing to do with dementia, but it does mean we’re not as sharp as we were in our 50s. Combine this with lower stamina and health issues caused by aging and the likelihood of bad decisions ramps up. For the same reason there is a minimum age limit, there should be a maximum age limit on presidential candidates – and all other politicians.
There are probably a number of “better options” out there for both sides. But I’m not sure either party is really looking for a “better option.” And I’m pretty sure a substantial percentage of the electorate isn’t expecting a “better option” to appear. Gives one a keener understanding of that old “horns of a dilemma” cliché, doesn’t it?
If either one of you had put ANY time and effort on anything but lining your own pockets and dissembling, you might be able to find someone. If you cared about ANYTHING except making sure the other side didn’t get what they want, you might be able to make a case that aligning with you was worthwhile. Ppffftt…
I like Biden, but I think he’s too old. He—and the party—are hoping that someone younger runs in the primary against. Then again, I could be wrong, and like usual, I probably am.
