Symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness, and swelling in joints, often the big toe. Attacks can come suddenly, often at night.

Oh goodie we transition from possibly finally getting Dexter to stop complaning about Kenny, which didn’t go anywhere to… Clarence has gout? I love this comic a lot since I started following it and caught up where I could, I genuinely stand by it… but it needs better storyline transitions.

I have gout in my hands. I can’t button my shirts or even hold a pencil. Thank goodness for keyboards.

Gout is caused a build-up of a substance called uric acid in the blood. You can technically get gout anywhere there is a joint, but it’s most common in the feet, specifically the bed toe.

Gout is no fun. The pain is excruciatingly severe and you almost feel like sticking a knife or other sharp object into the joint to get relief. Way back in the early 1970s, PBS ran the Six Wives of Henry the VIII as a miniseries and one of the episodes featured a scene of Henry (Keith Mitchell) screaming in agony at the doctor to lance the inflammation. I thought that was exaggerated until I had my first attack and couldn’t even bear the weight of a sheet on my foot and even the movement of air would trigger a spike in pain.

Gout is most unpleasant. It hit me about a week after eating a large jar of peanut butter or eating a gallon or more of boiled green peanuts.

I could have given up peanuts or taken allopurinol every day of my life since 2008. You can probably guess which I chose.

I didn’t realize how it was when my brother said his acted up. I’ve since gotten it and have had a couple of major instances of pain.
