The Morgan case makes me think of the Appin murder, that RLStevenson’s book “Kidnapped” was loosely based on. A secretive society, covering up a murder.
Mr. Carroll’s knowledge of our chief executives is extensive. At the time of Morgan’s disappearance, Fillmore was a member of the Anti-Masonic Party working as a lawyer in Buffalo. Batavia is about 41 miles from Buffalo, a trip of roughly 45 minutes under today’s conditions.
The so-called “deep state” can be understood to mean (by intelligent and sane people) the fact that the professionals at the different government departments (whether at the federal or state level) stay on independent of the politicians (of either or all parties) who happen to be in office at the time. Nothing to FEAR, although of course rampant bureaucracy does have its own considerable drawbacks.
Thanks, Brian! I had not heard that one. I had a really good US History class in high school. I took the summer session, where a hundred or more of us sat at desks in the gym, and a team of 5 instructors taught for 2-3 hours, each specializing in some general aspect of US History.

I was also a member of the Anti-Masonic Party from 1830 to 1834, transitioning to the new Whig Party in 34.
