Teach him to use a standard manual cash register to make change for 2 weeks or a month. He’d know his math tables by heart within a very short time or be looking for another job.
During the ‘progressive 60’s’, people began to deride the memorizing of math tables. They went to calculators, then to exotic but short-lived alternate math methods. Confusion set in.
Don’t know what method is used nowadays but still prefer a pencil/paper combination when doing checkbook or dimensions for projects, etc. But then, I also prefer hand writing letters to typed pages or emails, especially when a friend from my generation passes or if I have something special I need to pass to family members.
My math skills are pretty good. My problem is understanding accounting and financial practices that don’t seem to be related to anything resembling REAL math.
