I found a lucky penny once and put it in one of those mototized horses. It usually went for a minute. Well with that penny it went on and on. Then a line started and I had to get off.
Ooo! Be careful. My son used one of those candy dispensers (only it was a quarter when he was a kid, not a penny) and I noticed that more came out of the machine than actually fell into the hopper. I suspect someone beforehand forgot to hold their hand under the door as it was opened and the candy fell on the floor, rather than throw it out, it was put back into the hopper and the door carefully closed. So after that, I insisted on checking the machine before my son put any money in it. Most were OK, but I did find a couple that I had opened beforehand and candy came falling out before my son had put any money in. It could have been honest, i.e. the person who filled it may have given a special treat to the first kid to use the machine or perhaps the machine was worn and some “leaked” into the hopper, but in my son’s childhood (and especially today) I don’t leave things like this to “luck”.

It must have jammed the machine.

It would have been a good idea to have used this on the thirteenth of the month rather than the fourteenth. That would have added an element of irony.

Don’t see those candy dispensers anymore. I am sure the FDA and Dept. of Health declared them ‘unsanitary’. Too bad.

Mr. Basset must have been hallucinating when he drew this. The last time a gumball could be purchased with a penny was sometime in the 70’s.
