The scary thing is that there are several in the House who apparently believe it would be fine to allow the US to default.

We do NOT default on payments. That is laid down in the 14th amendment. It has never been tested, but we never had an insurrection such as is ongoing, thanks to those insurrectionists that are sitting in the repug House.

Biden needs to establish the precedent of a state of economic emergency, enabling him to impose a continuing resolution if no budget agreement is reached. Government shutdowns simply should not be a thing. Funding continues at the previous year’s level for as long as it takes to obtain another budget agreement — that provides an incentive for dealmaking and compromise instead of brinkmanship.

The Treasury is under the Executive Branch. If the President orders them to continue doling money out from government accounts, they will do so. Or if Janet Yellen is unwilling — it may require ignoring SCROTUS should they try to weigh in — then appoint someone else. Remember all the acting Secretaries under Trump? Biden is legally allowed to do the same if necessary. Rotate people into that job every seven months who are willing to follow his lead on this.

I’m sure repugs will whine that only Congress has the power of the purse and all that. Unfortunately, like many other things, there is no specific remedy if the President decides the Treasury will keep spending money. Other than impeachment. And they can impeach Biden 100 times if they like, there will never be a conviction in the Senate.

The GQP’s impotent fury, and the Biden administration’s fighting against them to keep the economy on track, will be yet another nail in the coffin of the crazies come 2024.

Dems scream default so they can get billions for more pork.

Why not service the debt first then look to cut? No default. Real easy to do.

The Replocos have already pulled the pin. The next step is to release the safety lever (restrained against the grenade by the left hand). That step actually represents the upcoming default and its consequences.

Ramirez illustrates an apt metaphor, but as usual his facts are inaccurate.

The Replocos have already pulled the pin. The next step is to release the safety lever (restrained against the grenade by the left hand). That step, regardless of who is the responsible party — or rather, the irresponsible party — actually represents the upcoming default and its consequences.

Gee Mr. Mikey….. I thought that the Trump “King of Debt” had Fixed this problem.

he said “Only I can Fix it” and we believed him.

I guess we need to elected him again so he can once and for all eliminate this debt the same way he declassified documents “WITH HIS MIND”

Can we get China to pay our debt the same way that Mexico payed for the wall?

That Trump guy. Such mind-blowing mind powers

So it is with godlike power the republicans will destroy the good name of the United States of America by defaulting on our debt?

The debt ceiling is to pay debt that representatives have already approved. The time to reduce spending is during the budget process. BTW if tax cuts for the rich and raising the social security earnings cap were repealed in addition to reducing approved expenditures there would be no problem.

Either the 20 who have McCarthy in a bind are arrogantly ignorant or frankly poorly educated… which should make the GOP pleased… that’s how they want all their minions.

$600 Billion in taxes goes uncollected in the US each year, the vast majority of that is from tax evading rich people (American Enterprise Institute spokesman on NPR this week). I’m willing to pay my fair share, as along as everyone, no matter how entitled, pays theirs. The Republicans want to cut spending instead of insisting, by enforcing the laws they are sworn to uphold, the rich pay up. Get us close to full, fair, tax collection and we’ll see if we really need to adjust spending. The new IRS agents Biden is hiring are the first step toward equal compliance.

History has shown that when taxes are raised, the rich use tax evasion techniques and pay less than before.

“The U.S. reaches a staggering $31.4 trillion debt limit (larger than the GDP) setting the stage for political brinkmanship, which may result in an economy crippling default.” -MR

    ===

I notice that “MR” does NOT mention which party is staging the brinkmanship.

He also NEVER mentions the Republican responsibility for exploding the deficit — he especially never mentions to invasions of Iraq and the Republican LIEs that drove us into that war

    AND

the Republican refusal to put the debt resulting from the invasion onto the books. That refusal forced it upon Obama to account for the Republicans’ debt.

Naturally, Republicans weaponized that debt and LIEd about it ever since. Including “MR”.

The GQP has inbred enough crazies and idiots that listen to conspiracy social media that they’ll believe any theory that “takes it to the establishment” and “pokes the globalist” and “makes the libs cry”. They are more interested in making points than governing.

If they cause a default. If they cancel or curtail Social Security or Medicare. If the House Republicans spend their time INVESTIGATING EVERYTHING, while the real world burns, will the performers like MTG, LB, MG etc have succeeded in “purifying” the Republican Party because they will be the only ones claiming to be Republicans?
